Building Community | Inspiring Readers | Expanding Book Access for All
About us
Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires readers, builds community, and expands book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led little libraries. Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are shared each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. There are more than 150,000 registered Little Free Library book exchanges worldwide, found in 50 states, 120 countries, and on all 7 continents. Our vision is a Little Free Library in every community and a book for every reader. We believe all people are empowered when the opportunity to discover a personally relevant book to read is not limited by time, space, or privilege. The Little Free Library nonprofit received the World Literacy Award and has been honored by the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation, Library Journal, the Women's National Book Association, and others.

October is Blindness and Vision Loss Awareness Month, and we are delighted to highlight one of our Impact Library Program recipients, the Ohio State School for the Blind in Columbus, Ohio. https://lnkd.in/giRCJjme Mary is an educator at the Ohio State School for the Blind and applied to our Impact Library Program because there were few braille and large print books in the community. She told us: "Our Little Free Library has provided an opportunity for our students to be able to give back to others. During Orientation and Mobility lessons, students have been traveling to the local thrift store to buy books to fill the Little Free Library. This provides a chance for students to learn skills that include using GPS walking directions, practicing white cane skills, asking for assistance at local businesses, and completing a purchase. "Any community members can access as our Little Free Library, as it is located at the end of the school’s long driveway. We currently put print books, large print books, audiobooks and Braille books in our library. Blindness is a spectrum. People who are blind have different way to access reading materials. Each person with vision loss accesses print material in a way that is best for them." Please reach out to learn more about our Impact Library Program and how you can help support stories like this one! #bookaccess #access #equity #littlefreelibrary #littlefreelibraries

Every month, we grant Little Free Library book-sharing boxes full of books to the under-resourced communities that need them most through our Impact Library Program. Recipient Jeana W. in Frankfort, Kentucky tells us: "At Thorn Hill Education Center, we promote family literacy and education. This Little Free Library opens up more literacy opportunities to people of all ages within the community and can help teach people new concepts, encourage creativity, and give them a fun, new hobby as well. We love that parents can grab a book here to take home to read to their children. The close bond that they will share while reading together is one reason we worked hard on this library. We want that opportunity to be available for free in all communities and Little Free Library is working hard to make that happen. It is such a wonderful program!” Thank you for supporting the Impact Library Program! The program is open year-round to applicants across the United States and Canada. Andy Yung, a pre-K teacher at P.S. 244Q in Flushing, NY, is increasing book access in his community by installing Little Free Library book-sharing boxes, and he’s using DonorsChoose to fund the literacy project. “My first LFL project sought to bring two libraries into my community,” Andy said. “I grew up in the community I currently teach at, so it’s a special place for me. I see a lot of myself in the students I serve and my own parents in theirs. I know how some members of the community often don’t have expendable income to buy books for their kids. I also know how important having books at home can be to impact a child’s future.” Learn more about Andy's journey and why he recommends that teachers use DonorsChoose to fund a Little Free Library project: https://lnkd.in/g3d2BEBM #teachers #educators #education #donorschoose #littlefreelibrary #littlefreelibraries
