About us
When it comes to health indicators, Alabama ranks among the lowest in the U.S. In Alabama, 67% of people are living with a chronic disease—that’s almost 7 out of every 10 people you know. Health is a complex equation, dealing not only with the provision of medical care, but with a broad series of factors impacting the lives of individuals and neighborhoods. These factors include zip code, income, education, race/ethnicity, family history, and many other issues. At Live HealthSmart Alabama, we are implementing changes to remove barriers to making healthy choices—with a specific focus on reducing those barriers in education, good nutrition, physical activity, and prevention & wellness.

Since its launch in late 2019, Live HealthSmart Alabama (LHSA), UAB's holistic initiative to improve health outcomes in Alabama, has emphasized collaboration and sustainability on the path to making good health simple. That’s why LHSA’s Community Leadership Academy (CLA)—made possible through the generous partnership of Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, Inc.—is focused on identifying, encouraging, and empowering neighborhood leaders who will build upon the initiative’s early successes in neighborhoods like Bush Hills, East Lake, Titusville, and Kingston. Across 10 biweekly sessions on topics ranging from budgeting to conflict resolution, CLA participants develop the skills, connections, and confidence to continue advocating for their communities for years to come. As leadership development specialist Kathy Boswell described it, while LHSA develops communities across Birmingham, the Community Leadership Academy “develops the people who live in those communities.” Read the story here: https://lnkd.in/eCT3zbMv

🌟CLA Member Spotlight: Janet Maycock🌟 “Upon my election as President of the Druid Hills Neighborhood Association, I was invited to join the Community Leadership Academy. I pursued this role to serve my community and had a series of initiatives I believed would positively affect our health, well-being, and environment.” Meet Janet Maycock a dynamic leader and member of our Community Leadership Academy’s first cohort. Ms. Maycock shares her inspiring journey of leadership and how the academy helped her turn her vision into reality. “The Academy offered the necessary tools to leverage my strengths and advance these initiatives,” Ms. Maycock explains. “It also fostered a network of leaders whose collective experiences and collaborations are poised to benefit our communities significantly for years to come.” Join us on this empowering journey by applying to be part of our second cohort! While we are encouraging participants from Bush Hills, Druid Hills, Evergreen, East Lake, Titusville, Kingston, Fountain Heights, and Central City, everyone is welcome. We recently hosted a Shopper’s Appreciation event at Birmingham Towers where shoppers were given $25 vouchers to our Mobile Market! Shoppers were able to choose from a variety of fresh produce, pantry staples, proteins, and dairy. We had such a wonderful time and look forward to hosting similar events in the future. A thank you also to the UnitedHealthcare team for joining us at the event to provide the shoppers with important information on health insurance.
