We are thrilled to announce that Dave Magee has joined our team at Locusview! Dave has a GIS degree and has been selling software and related GIS services to gas and electric utilities throughout his career. For the past sixteen years, he has been selling ArcFM for Schneider Electric. The first eight years of his tenure at SE focused on selling ArcFM internationally, while the past eight years have centered on sales in North America. His sales career success is complemented by a collaborative effort from professionals in Product Development, Sales Engineering, Implementation Specialists, Senior Management, and countless other specialized Subject Matter Experts who have contributed over the years. He is looking forward to engaging with the Locusview team and structuring sales strategies that leverage the expertise of the company's talent to solve customer challenges. In his spare time, Dave is an accomplished cartoonist and wildlife artist. He has a wonderful family and enjoys hosting family and friends during holidays and special events. He loves to travel with his family, but they all love peace and quiet when they are at their home in rural New Hampshire. Welcome aboard, Dave!

Helper is a hidden gem feature in the Locusview mobile application that enables field crews to access supporting information without cluttering up the main screen. Users can click on a Helper button to get access to: - Task-specific instructions from an operating manual or manufacturer installation guide - Pictures, charts, and drawings with more detailed information - Training reminders and tips - Safety bulletins - Additional details and example about what data needs to be collected - Instructions in another language One utility added an image from the company’s procedures to provide guidance on how to enter the Class Location data. Another utility adds detailed instructions on pass/fail criteria for a quality inspection to promote consistency among inspectors. Features like Helper are the key to leveraging mobile technology to employer field crews and inspectors with access to information to increase productivity and improve workmanship quality.

What are the benefits of using high accuracy GPS during digital as-builting? Excavation damage remains one of the most significant threats to underground gas and electric infrastructure. Inaccurate locating and mapping is a significant contributing factor to excavation damage according to the Common Ground Alliance’s Dirt Report. Digital as-builting with sub-foot accurate GPS creates spatial data for GIS to enable future one-call operations to utilize the GPS data for locating. Black Hills Energy and Puget Sound Energy publish as-built data to a GIS viewer within 24 hours to provide accurate data for one-call locators and emergency responders. Reducing the risk of excavation damage to newly installed facilities by providing accurate and timely data in a GIS viewer is a powerful way to leverage high-accuracy GPS data. Digital as-builting with sub-foot GPS also provides significant efficiencies in closing out construction projects. Technicians no longer need to manually create point and line features in GIS. Instead, assets mapped in the field with GPS and attributes populated with data from the barcode are delivered directly into a staging environment. Technicians review and approve the data, connect it to existing assets in GIS, and then publish to the production environment. Other benefits of high quality maps include: - Quickly locate assets during emergencies - Identify the precise location of recalled assets without unnecessary digging - Locate valves and manholes that may have been paved over - Perform designs without field verification visits

Maria Ilac, Puget Sound Energy, presented on their Locusview DCM deployment for asset tracking and traceability at the Esri UC with Danny Petrecca. Maria shared her thoughts on the importance of ease of use for field crews "If it isn't easy, they won't use it, and we won't get the data. A good user experience isn't a nice-to-have, it is a requirement." We couldn't agree more!

During the execution phase of a large infrastructure project for a utility in California, VPI Charge was given new as-built data requirements - GPS accuracy within 2-inches for all underground electric lines. Construction contractors would typically hire a third-party survey company to perform this work, but VPI Charge wanted to explore other options. Zack Chancellor, Senior Project Manager at VPI Charge, knew that other companies were using Locusview to enable their construction crews to capture high accuracy GPS data without the need for a third-party surveyor, so he reached out to see what we could do. We worked with Zack and his team to quickly configure a digital as-builting solution in a matter of days to meet the project schedule. Construction crews only needed four hours of training before they were collecting high accuracy GPS data. Field users reported “the hardware and software were user-friendly and easy to get acquainted with.” The project lasted about six months spanning 23 work orders. The average GPS accuracy was 1.7-inches for over three miles of installed electric cable. “One of the biggest benefits we realized was that we no longer had to coordinate with outside survey crews or deal with the delays caused by conflicting schedules.” This resulted in a time savings of about 20% in project management for closeouts and reduced time in the field. Once the project was complete, VPI Charge estimated a 50% reduction in GPS data collection costs compared to hiring a third-party survey company.
