One lightning strike can cause immense damage that goes beyond fire - Damage to the electrical infrastructure and electronics can be destroyed - bringing communication, security and productivity to a halt. According to LPI partner - the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I), national insurance claims data reveals: //The total value of lightning-caused U.S. homeowners insurance claims rose by over 30% in 2023, totaling $1.27 billion, compared to $950 million in 2022. //The number of lightning-caused U.S. homeowners insurance claims increased by 13.8%. //The average cost per lightning-caused claim surged by 14.6%, from $15,280 in 2022 to $17,513in 2023.   These risks can be mitigated. Start with an ASSESSMENT. Then, take the necessary actions to PROTECT you, your home and business. If the assessment puts your structure in a mid to high range area of risk, seek additional support from an LPI certified contractor to discuss lightning protection systems. 72% of Lightning Deaths* occur in June, July, and August.  ASSESS your risk before a storm. Today - we focus on //Personal Safety// with our industry partner the National Lightning Safety Council. Leisure activities account for almost *62% of deaths by lightning. Read a detailed review of the key contributors to lightning death - gender, location, activities - in this study completed by John Jensenius of the National Lightning Safety Council (link below). Assessment allows us to choose the right way to PROTECT ourselves. 1. Check the weather/radar maps before you leave for an event. 2. Once at an event, make a plan on where to go if there is thunder. Know your options before going outside to protect YOU and your FAMILY. #1  If you hear thunder, SEEK SHELTER immediately. AVOID 2. Open fields, the top of a hill or a ridge top. 3. Tall, isolated trees or other tall objects. 4. Water and metal objects, such as fences and poles. Beyond structural damage and fires… One Lightning strike can disable an entire building’s operations, security, and communication system. Business comes to a stop - losing revenue, customers, or even the entire building. These losses are impacting the insurance industry as well. Convective storms – which are associated with thunder, lightning and other weather changes -  caused $38 billion in insured losses in the first half of 2023.    “Assessing your risk to lightning before a storm enables homeowners and business owners to predict and mitigate their risks to losses due to a lightning strike,” said Sean Kevelighan, President, and CEO of the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I).  “We endorse the LPI Double Check initiative because it aligns with our efforts to predict and prevent known risks.” Prevention starts with assessing your risks.
