💣 2 large Data Brokers are now confirmed to have leaked millions of Americans SSNs and other PII online. So now what? 🥇 First, assume that you and anyone you know have had their data leaked. 🥈 Second, go into action! ❄ Freeze your credit at Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union immediately. “But, Josh, I need my Credit Cards to work?!” This doesn’t keep those from working, this is to keep anyone, even you from opening a new line of credit. The process is pretty simple and critical. It is also pretty easy to unfreeze when you need to establish a new line of credit. By doing this you are making it very difficult for a threat actor to create a fraudulent identity leveraging all of your information which again, assume that we all know and have it now. Something just as critical is for anyone under 18 to freeze their credit. They are highly sought-after SSNs because few are paying attention to their credit history, so they are highly targeted to create fake identities. Imagine your kid going to get their first Credit Card or to buy their first car only to find out someone else has been using “their credit” for years. There are horror stories of this and it is taking years to unwind. I would also urge anyone who has NOT set up online access to their bank accounts to do it now. You are more of a target if you have NOT created an online account than if you already have one. *Note if you are reading this it is unlikely you haven’t set up your online bank access, but I can guarantee you that you know family members and friends who haven’t, please advise them to do so. There is no going off the grid. 🔒 Also always leverage multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-factor authentication (2FA) on these accounts as well.
