About us
Long Beach BLAST – Better Learning for All Students Today, is a 501 (c)(3) organization whose mission is to improve the success for at-promise students through collaboration and innovative approaches to mentoring and learning. Our vision is - Every student: inspired to succeed academically and personally. BLAST was founded in 2000 by attorney and youth advocate, Jean Egan, in response to studies conducted as part of the City of Long Beach’s 2010 Strategic Plan. Those results indicated that Long Beach citizens wanted to ensure a consistent, citywide focus on improving the well-being of the city’s youth. Key goals set forth in the plan included increasing the percentage of at-risk youth meeting academic standards, increasing youth engagement in productive activities, and engaging college students as volunteers and mentors. Long Beach BLAST focuses on disadvantaged youth in Long Beach, California, and supports, engages, and inspires them to work towards high school diplomas and set goals for the future. BLAST works with more than 800 at-risk students per year through two programs: the Academic Mentoring Program and the Bridge to Success Program. Volunteer Opportunities: 1. College Academic Mentor 2. Guest Speaker/Career Fair 3. Legacy Council Legacy Council - is a group of young professionals who commit their time and talents to support Long Beach BLAST, through volunteer activities. Mentorship is at the core of our beliefs and our council. * Mentoring – Our members enjoy the mutually beneficial relationship that mentoring provides. As a young, up and coming professional you will have the opportunity to be mentored by a more established professional. Likewise, if you are a more seasoned professional, you can “Pay it Forward” and mentor a new professional. *Networking events and other volunteering opportunities are also part of the Legacy Council.

BLAST Mentor/Mentee Spotlight 🔦 "It has been an absolute joy to work with my incredibly talented 2nd grade student. One thing that really stands out about her is her exceptional skills in reading and writing as well as math. She has a natural talent for storytelling and her creativity knows no bounds. However, like many kids her age, she has faced some challenges along the way. One of the biggest hurdles she has encountered is a lack of confidence in herself. It's not uncommon for children to doubt their abilities, but it's our responsibility as mentors to help them believe in their potential. To address this, we've been working on building her self-esteem by highlighting her strengths and celebrating her accomplishments, no matter how small. I constantly remind her that every step forward is a victory, and that progress should be cherished. Through positive reinforcement and encouragement, we have seen her confidence grow and her self-belief flourish. I know these can be achieved but confidence takes time to develop, so it's important to be patient and supportive throughout her journey. In addition to her love for reading and writing, she has a deep passion for art. She is a true artist at heart, finding solace and joy in the world of colors and shapes. Looking towards the future, she has mentioned her sights on becoming an artist. I am confident that she will achieve great things in the art industry. Her journey will undoubtedly be filled with growth, challenges, and endless opportunities to explore new avenues of creative expression. As her mentor, I am incredibly proud of her progress and the strides she has made in both her artistic and personal development." - Jasmin G., CSULB Academic Mentor #academicmentor #mentorship #growth #communityimpact

Kudos to our team members Kassandra Beltran, MS & Angela Alvarez who are actively contributing to the community by generously sharing their expertise in mentorship! Their commitment to making a positive impact is truly commendable 👏 "The best way to thank a mentor is to pay it forward, by becoming a mentor yourself." – Anonymous
Kaiser Permanente, Hippocrates Circle Annual Forum ✨️ Today, I presented at the Hippocrates Circle Annual Forum, with my colleague Kassandra Beltran, MS. Our focus was on sharing mentorship best practices with a dedicated group of Kaiser Permanente physicians who generously volunteer their time to mentor youth in the Hippocrates Circle Program. Hippocrates Circle is an initiative that strives to increase the diversity of the incoming physician population by creating a pathway program to expose young, diverse, middle school students (7th and 8th graders) to physician careers. Witnessing the very essence of what drives and resonates with me the most—mentorship—flourishing across various fields, not only brings me immense joy but also a profound sense of fulfillment. I am always happy to contribute to the expansion of work that is not only meaningful but also has a lasting, generational impact! Alexander Bonilla, thank you for being a gracious host. I look forward to our continued work together! #kaiserpermanente #Hippocratescircle #annual #forum #mentorship
