On view this month in the Community Gallery: the playful work of kindergarten students from Prospect School, part of Hempstead Union Free Public Schools. With the goal of fostering early development of fine motor skills, these artists used shaving cream, paint, clay, and clothespins as they created their work. Here, the emphasis was on the artistic process rather than on completed art products. These works of art were created under the direction of art teacher Olivia DiSanto, whom you may recognize from her years of working at LICM, most recently as an instructor in our early childhood workshops and the Together to Kindergarten program. We wish Ms. DiSanto luck in her new career as a full-time teacher! 🎨 #CommunityGallery #YoungArtists #SensoryArt #ArtIsPlay #ArtEducation #PlayLICM

STEM Initiatives Program Director Claire D'Emic recently traveled to Chicago for the 2024 Assocation of Science and Technology Centers Conference, where she displayed a poster made in collaboration with Alix Cotumaccio and Renata Brown, M.A. entitled "Slowing Down to Tune In: The Benefits of Reflective Practice,” and was also part of an interactive presentation entitled “Pedagogical Parkour: Exploring the Evolving Landscape of Professional Learning” in partnership with Michael Kmietowicz, Alexandra Pearson, Christina Woods and Mindy Porter. This presentation focused on successes, challenges and ways to problem-solve for those who lead different types of professional learning. The conference as a whole focused largely on the connection between planetary and mental health, and the role museums must play as a source of information and hope when it comes to climate change. These conversations sparked some ideas about how we can address this topic in our own community in a way that is age-appropriate and solution-based. Many thanks to the organizers of the ASTC conference and all participants for providing insightful discussion and inspiration! #ASTC #ScienceMuseums #Conference #Museums #PlayLICM

Say hello to Catherine Clark, our new Pop Tots and Little Learners Art Lab teacher. Here’s a little bit about her: Catherine graduated from Stonehill College in 2022 with a BA in Educational Studies and History with a minor in Arts Administration. She started at LICM in the summer of 2022 as an educator and working with the Enrichment to Excellence Program (now known as 21st Century Community Learning Centers). She is now the Museum’s Community Partnerships Educator and loves working with students of all ages. From early childhood classes to middle school education, Catherine enjoys engaging with students and families in the community. In her free time, Catherine likes to read, paint and spend time with her family. She gets her creativity from her mom, who always encouraged art making and play-based learning for Catherine and her siblings growing up. Catherine is excited to experiment, learn, and create in this year's Pop Tots and Little Learners classes! Last week, Team LICM came together for our Play Summit: a training series focused on the benefits of play and how we can encourage families to play together while simultaneously ensuring that they have the best possible experience when visiting LICM. Following one of these busy days of talking about play, staff were invited to take part in an after-hours game of kickball. We are excited to implement all that we learned when we welcome our visitors back following Fall Fix-Up on Saturday, September 28. #StaffTraining #PowerOfPlay #Vision #Mission #FallFixUp #PlayBasedLearning #TeamBuilding #PlayLICM
