The Financial Literacy Club had the opportunity to hear from Kristina Mathews, a Senior Revenue Agent within the Large Business and International Division of the IRS. Kristina earned her Master’s Degree in Professional Accounting (Tax) from the University of Washington in 1994 and received an offer from the IRS in Los Angeles where she has worked for the past thirty years. She shared insights on revenue agents’ roles, discussed the four divisions of the IRS (Wage and Investment, Tax Exempt and Government Entities, Small Business/Self-Employed, and Large Business and International), and emphasized the importance of tax responsibilities. Members sought advice on maximizing deductions and navigating IRS audits, to which Kristina offered valuable strategies for tax optimization. We are grateful to have heard from Kristina Mathews, an experienced professional at the IRS, who provided valuable insights with the Financial Literacy Club.

The Financial Literacy Club had the privilege to hear from Joyce Phillips, the founder and CEO of Equal Future Corporation, a B2B Fintech company focused on helping individuals achieve financial wellness through inclusive financial solutions. Joyce explained the intricacies of the Equal Future personal finance app including its budgeting tools, AI assistant, and admin portal to customize profiles to match individual scenarios. Members asked about the obstacles faced during the process of creating Equal Future, how one could implement the application in various business models, and the main demographic of its users. At the end of the meeting, we asked members to complete a feedback form regarding the application and which features they would benefit from the most. We hope to share these results with Joyce and her team, and were inspired to learn about her innovative approach to improving financial literacy.
