This past February was by far my most memorable time here at Taubman. As I prepare to graduate, I hope this tradition of celebrating Black History Month and uplifting black voices continues. It is especially important in todays climate that we do not fall prey to the challenges we are faced with. We take them straight on with a smile and believe that we can and will never be silenced. The amount of support that was given throughout the planning and execution of our programming was immeasurably overwhelming and I appreciate every student, faculty member and guest soeaker for being a part of something so inspiring.
Taubman College hosted its first-ever Black History Month programming as part of a student-led effort to increase representation and visibility in the college. The programming was led by Naomi Bailey, ASLA, MURP ’25 with help from jøn kent, Lawson Schultz, Chelsea Hampton, Tre’Nard Morgan, Marcellous Weaver, Kenyatta Washington. The team worked with staff, Nyanatee Bailey, M.A, to create programming that would appeal to both Taubman and Stamps students. The event featured a series of intimate and relaxed fireside chats featuring Black planning professionals who are addressing systemic inequities and historical erasure. The program’s movie nights centered on themes of gentrification, food insecurity, and criminal justice. Naomi said these events are extremely important at a predominantly white institution, recognizing the lack of representation felt by African American students in Taubman and Stamps. “African American history is at the forefront of the conversation, and oftentimes this history doesn’t show the good of African Americans. Bringing this to the forefront, that we do have students of color who want to do this work, lets us shine a positive light on them so that they can feel proud to be in this building,” said Naomi Bailey.
