Our project the “the joy generator” is an example of how storytelling and subtle product placement can create an effective marketing message. With Switzerland’s elaborate train system as the backdrop, we crafted a story around two skiers who meet on the train. As they travel resorts together, they push each other’s unique ski styles as a team. The short film inspires a sense of camaraderie and motivates the brand’s audience to get outside with friends. The skiers’ passion for the sport is infectious, and you can’t help but pray for snow. Inspired by the fast-paced camera movements and editing style of Guy Ritchie films, as well as Wes Anderson’s use of color, “the joy generator” was one of those rare branded projects that allowed us to push our creativity. The film reminds us that skiing is for everyone, regardless of skill level. Anyone can enjoy this more humble aspect of skiing—piste features found at any ski resort. As a creative, it’s easy to pour all your mental energy into your work. It becomes necessary to refill your creativity batteries by enjoying hobbies, resting, and doing activities that bring you joy. Make room for pastimes that are not tied to your work. Follow your joy. Commit to one thing (big or small) that brings you joy every day. This small practice can positively impact your work, health, and happiness!

LORE started as a dream many years ago before it even had a name. We sought independence in our careers and knew we could build something creative together. Our original thought was to travel the US in a camper while working remotely. We soon realized that our roots are here in Seattle and that we love traveling for work, but not full time. Since we planted that original seed, our shared vision evolved into LORE. If you’re following along, thanks for being here! We’re excited for what’s to come. -Nick & Amanda

Three video production tools I can’t live without: FilmConvert: This is a killer Premiere Pro plugin that allows you to emulate classic analog film stocks. It has a big selection of color negative and B&W looks, and allows you to precisely control grain levels as well. I use this primarily for documentary, branded and social media videos, anything that benefits from a more “retro” or “stylized” look. This plugin isn’t for corporate and broadcast productions which require a cleaner, more true-to-life color grade. This reel was graded using FilmConvert. Fast Prime Lenses: Fast primes have long been the go-to type of glass for cinematographers. I use a 6-lens set of Zeiss Milvus Primes, most of them F1.4 and covering full frame. I like these for the image quality, they are weather sealed, have a durable all metal build and while not true cinema lenses, have a long and smooth focus throw. For gimbal work and sports shoots where changing focal lengths on the fly is necessary I also use Canon L zooms. Artlist: This is a great platform that has a solid selection of royalty-free music to use in all your edits. For commercials, corporate videos, and now even social media videos, having royalty free tunes is a must. Artlist is also quite affordable at 200/year which is useful if you are an up and coming filmmaker. What are your favorite production tools? Share them in the comments! -Nick
