  • The Barn (Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #1319) is widely recognized as an iconic adaptive reuse project by famed architect A. Quincy Jones—but did you know it was originally built as a photography studio and residence for pioneering commercial photographer Mary Mead Maddick? 📸✨ A rare success in a male-dominated industry, Mead Maddick captured the essence of post-WWII American women, shaping the visual culture of the 1950s and ‘60s. The Barn served as Mead Maddick’s studio during the most prolific part of her career. It was the location of hundreds of photo shoots for advertising campaigns and magazine covers for publications such as Parade and Ladies’ Home Journal. Her story, like so many women’s, is finally stepping out of the shadows. Discover more about LA’s historic sites tied to women’s history through the Women’s Rights in Los Angeles Historic Context Statement. • This African American Heritage Month, we’re celebrating, Senior City Planner Kinikia Gardner. Kinikia is an Urban Planning and Community Development Professional with more than 20 years of experience. Dedicated to strengthening underserved communities, Kinikia has focused many of her professional and personal efforts on improving the aesthetics, economic and social fabrics within various overlooked neighborhoods. This commitment also spills over into her personal life, having served on an Advisory Committee for an Affordable Housing Developer and as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Compton. Also, since 2011, Kinikia has been a certified Planner through the American Planning Association. A native of South Los Angeles, Kinikia’s interest in Urban Planning was initially sparked by her experience growing up in a disenfranchised community. She was interested in finding solutions to achieving a more equitable quality of life for her community and communities like hers that would place them in parity with the city’s more well resourced neighborhoods. This, along with her formal introduction to the Planning field while working as a Council Deputy to former Los Angeles City Council member Rita Walters (of the Ninth Council District), motivated Kinikia to earn a Master of Urban Planning from the University of Southern California (USC). Outside of work, Kinikia is a self-described “Disney Adult,” foodie and has a strong sense of wanderlust. Her love for Disney parks was sparked during her time working as a custodian at Disneyland during her high school and college years. She enjoys partaking in a wide range of cuisines and travelling to regions near and far, which includes visiting Disney parks in the U.S. and abroad (Disneyland, Disneyworld, Tokyo Disney and Disneyland Paris).

  • 🏛️ Landmarks Impacted by the Palisades Fire On Jan. 13, 2025, Mayor Karen Bass issued Emergency Executive Order No. 1 to accelerate recovery and rebuilding efforts in response to the devastating Palisades Fire. As part of this initiative, Los Angeles City Planning’s Office of Historic Resources (OHR) has compiled a detailed summary of impacts to designated historic landmarks in the Pacific Palisades area, based on inspections conducted by City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. No other historic resources across the City sustained damage in the January fires. Preserving our historic landmarks remains a priority as we move forward with recovery efforts. The SurveyLA Historic Resources Survey Report for the Brentwood-Palisades community plan area offers an overview of the cultural and architectural history of the Palisades area, including its development history and places of significance.   To help guide rebuilding efforts, City Planning is providing property owners and the community with critical guidance on the application of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties—national standards for preserving historic sites while allowing for necessary changes. 📄 View the full summary of fire impacts here: https://lnkd.in/dvKp4_cp                                                                          📄 View the SurveyLA Brentwood-Palisades Historic Resources Survey Report here: https://lnkd.in/dBkgzN5H 🏡 Access guidance for property owners here: https://lnkd.in/diZGeyJT #PalisadesFire #LAPlanning #HistoricPreservation #LACityPlanning #LosAngeles #RecoveryAndRebuilding #ProtectingHistory
