This week, we were happy to join the US Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, for a Groundbreaking Ceremony to celebrate the beginning of Federal levee construction for the Morganza to the Gulf of Mexico Storm Risk Reduction System, Reach A! “Today marks a significant step in protecting more than 200,000 residents in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes from hurricanes and other major storms,” said CPRA Chairman Gordon “Gordy” Dove. “The Reach A gap has long been a vulnerable point in the Morganza to the Gulf system, leaving Houma and nearby communities exposed to flooding, storm surge, and rising sea levels. With this groundbreaking, we are one step closer to closing that gap and offering these communities greater protection and peace of mind.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/guVqF_eh

Amazing news for Southwest Louisiana!🎉 Yesterday, we were thrilled to join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a Groundbreaking Ceremony to celebrate the start of the Southwest Louisiana Coastal Project! This groundbreaking marks a huge step in making real progress towards elevating hundreds of homes and businesses in the region and providing Southwest Louisiana some long overdue protection from storm-surge-based flooding.🌊 “This project has demonstrated how coordination between local, state, and federal partners can lead to results that will create positive, generational change. We’re incredibly proud of the relationship we’ve built with Calcasieu, Cameron, and Vermilion parishes and the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and today is evidence of how far we’ve come and how our cooperation can benefit Louisianans.” - CPRA Executive Director Glenn Ledet Jr. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gSye8iJi

This week, Congressional staffers visited the #MorganzatotheGulf Hurricane Risk Reduction System. We visited key sites on the Houma Navigation Canal and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway #GIWW where the project will construct locks and gates to close the system during times of storms - but also maintain navigation on these busy waterways. Excellent visit to learn the strategies envisioned to balance navigation and risk reduction. We also saw how the levees handled #HurricaneFrancine’s storm surge, preventing flooding for thousands of residents in the parish. With this year’s significant hurricane season, the need to invest in this coastal risk reduction infrastructure is all too apparent. Thanks to Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana, Terrebonne Levee & Conservation District, North Lafourche Levee District, and Morganza Action Coaliton for hosting Holly Hendrix, Coby Sammis, Leah McPhearson, MPA, Christian Bergeron, and Caroline Theriot! The local, state, and federal partnership is vital to our success. Also the dolphins and bald eagles were out in full force!

Without action, this critical habitat could disappear in just a few decades, breaking a vital link in the global migratory chain. But there’s hope! CPRA and our partners are “Unbreaking Barriers” by protecting and restoring this essential ecosystem. 🌱Learn more about how we're preserving over 6,000 acres of nesting and foraging grounds by visiting: https://lnkd.in/gcz2s964
