Fight climate change by committing European real estate players to low-carbon building
About us
Building sector represents 39% of CO2 footprint in Europe. To reduce its impact, it is necessary to set global targets in Europe. And to do so, it is essential to have a common carbon accounting methodology across Europe, allowing to measure carbon on building whole life cycle. This harmonized methodology does not exist yet. To solve this issue, 10 major European stakeholders have joined LCBI in 2021, together with a scientific committee. They have built a common methodology, published in April 2023, after 2 years of technical work. In a few words, LCBI is a pan-european accounting methodology allowing to measure carbon footprint on a building whole life cycle, including embodied, operational and biogenic carbon. Based on existing European standards (Level(s), CRREM, etc), it matches existing carbon accounting principles and is easy to apply. Being performance-based, LCBI includes thresholds allowing label-delivery. Goal is to drive down real-estate carbon footprint and highlight most ambitious buildings.

💡 Great report by BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe that serves as a regulatory analysis for implementing Whole Life Carbon related policies. While the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive mandates measurement of life cycle Global Warming Potential (GWP) starting 2028, and creation of a "Union Framework for national GWP calculation" the #INDICATE team has identify a policy framework to accelerate progress in WLC measurement. ▶ Among many elements, the report underlines the opportunity, through the creation of this EU Framework, to "𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬", improving comparability of WLC reporting. ❗ Without transparency and harmonization, differing methods could cause confusion and higher costs for the construction industry, potentially prolonging the divergence of national approaches, vision we support at Low Carbon Building Initiative Congrats #INDICATE authors Martin RÖCK Zsolt Toth KU Leuven

📢 NEW REPORT! As urgent action is needed on Whole Life Carbon (WLC) emissions, we here show "How to establish Whole Life Carbon benchmarks" as the basis for rapid emission reduction 👇 Get most valuable insights for WLC in Europe and lessons learned within the #INDICATE pilot with our partners in Ireland, Czechia, and Spain. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dqESRiJH 🏛️ Policy background - The revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD) mandates life cycle Global Warming Potential (GWP) measurement by 2028. While time is short, the INDICATE team has identified a *workable policy framework* that can be adopted quickly and fast-track progress. - After two years of work in Czechia, Spain, and Ireland, we here show how these countries are developing WLC frameworks by learning from frontrunning countries. This is crucial for meeting 2028 regulations and setting effective reduction targets. 💡 Key recommendations for EU Member States: - Start developing WLC methodologies now – there’s no time to waste! Follow proven policy design frameworks from the frontrunning countries and INDICATE pilots. - Focus on *consistency* in WLC assessments, even with imperfect data. Align WLC reduction with net-zero goals. 🌐 Recommendations for the European Commission: - Ensure the 2027 Delegated Act provides clear guidance for consistent GWP measurement. We’ve identified *12 key elements* that the COM must provide guidance on to ensure *reliability and comparability* of Member States results – notably, EU countries need guidance to ensure consistent implementation of existing environmental standards such as EN 15978, EN 15804 and Level(s). - Adopt *common reporting templates* and approved tools for WLC assessments to ensure transparency and comparability. 📷 SIBCA wrap-up Yesterday was a big day for LCBI at the 2024 SIBCA - Salon de l'Immobilier Bas Carbone edition in Paris. 🎤 An inspiring roundtable took place, tackling the following issue : “Decarbonizing Europe’s real estate : regulatory landscape and financial impact on portfolio percormances”, featuring the first European awarded LCBI labels. This discussion, moderated by Amélie Rives, Impact for the Future, featured Gloria Brocchi, Head of Sustainability at Generali Real Estate ; Katharina Knapton-Vierlich, Head of Construction Policy at European Commission, Arnaud Regout, BPI Real Estate CIO. 💬 Katharina Knapton-Vierlich assessed : « The most important today is to build and renovate in a way that is less environnementally damaging. And lots of décisions are made before the building is built.» 💬 Gloria Brocchi - MRICS, about the LCBI label : « It is important to have a pathway. Having a first measurement is helping you to better perform the activities. It is also helping is for the relationships with our investors » 💬 and Arnaud Regout, BPI to agree : « Between countries, we don’t discuss about the same things. There are lobbies, and nothing is harmonised. I Hope that the harmonisation will come easily ; not too regulated but easily understood. » 🍾 Our Director Cécile Dap also gave an introductory speech for the LBCI Label Award Cocktail which then took place… Bureau Veritas France stood by her side to tell a few words on the method and the first two European certified projects : Citywave, in Milan, by Generali Real Estate and Roots in Luxembourg, by BPI Real Estate. Congrats to each one of them and more information very soon about these first LCBI awarded projects ! 🥂 Association pour le Développement du Batiment Bas Carbone (Association BBCA) Frédéric vingtans Andrea Cottone Samuel Duprieu #lowcarbon #LBCI #SIBCA #LCBIlabels
