Even after 3 decades of starting businesses, leading teams, and developing other leaders, one of toughest challenges I face - and one I know every leader grapples with - is walking the line between influencing my team and manipulating them. Think about it: How many times have you invested in training or development for your team, believing it would bring out their best—only to realize later you never asked if they even wanted growth in that area? Who was that training really benefiting? You see my point? Here’s the truth: Influence is when you guide people toward what’s best for them. Manipulation is when your focus is getting the best FROM them - primarily for your own benefit. Most days, I feel like a penguin trying to shuffle across a tightrope - awkwardly balancing between both. (And yes, the penguin picture will say it all.) If we’re being honest as leaders, every day we place one foot in influence and one in manipulation. The difference lies in intent. Are your actions today about helping your team grow? Or are they just about squeezing out their best performance? Don’t answer to quickly - be honest with yourself.
