⭐ Student Spotlight ⭐ Meet Caroline Gwaro, a 3rd year graduate student from Kisii, Kenya. Caroline conducts research in Professor Graça Vicente’s lab, researching, designing, and synthesizing novel BODIPY dye derivatives for applications in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and bioimaging. After graduation, Caroline would like to work in industry but does not mind going into academia either. "My research area gives me a sense of fulfillment since I'm working to solve the world's greatest monster: cancer. Besides, working with fluorescent dyes is so fascinating! There's never a dull moment in the lab except when reactions are not working."

Graduate student Spencer Watts, undergraduate Larissa Najera, and Prof. Sviatoslav Baranets dive into the complex crystal structure and electronic properties of β-Yb₂CdSb₂, exploring the bonding environment and how structural disorder plays a vital role in charge balance, shaping its semiconducting behavior. Check out their study, recently published in 𝘊𝘳𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘴, to learn how it expands the understanding of polymorphism in intermetallic compounds and opens new pathways for materials with potential applications in thermoelectric technology. https://lnkd.in/gZgy_4eA

In Louisiana, math is making waves in oyster farming! 🦪 Dr. Nadejda Drenska, Assistant Professor of LSU Department of Mathematics, known for her work in areas like self-driving cars, investment strategies, and healthcare, has teamed up with Dr. Peter Wolenski and Louisiana Sea Grant’s Dr. Sarah Bodenstein to tackle a unique problem: counting oyster seeds. This labor-intensive task, usually done by hand, is now being transformed through machine learning—saving farmers countless hours and boosting Louisiana’s oyster farming industry. Shoutout to this incredible team! 🙌 Check out our latest blog to learn more about this research: https://lnkd.in/gJEuXb_r #mathematics #oysterfarming #MachineLearning #LSU #WBTTW
