The energy transition is driving job growth. The U.S. Department of Energy is reporting that the country created over 250,000 new energy jobs in 2023 with 56% of those jobs being in clean energy. The LSU Institute for Energy Innovation believes this job growth will continue through 2024 and beyond due to the impact of massive private and federal investments and federal tax credits in carbon sequestration, hydrogen, batteries, geothermal, solar and wind. A very large-scale iron-air battery project in Maine just received a federal grant to produce a system capable of delivering 8,500 megawatt hours of power back to the electricity grid over a 100-hour time period. This type of duration and scale previously was only available from pumped-storage hydro facilities. Large-scale battery arrays will be easier to permit and quicker to build than pumped-storage hydro. They also can be build in markets like Louisiana that lack the elevation differences needed to make pumped-hydro work. The LSU Institute for Energy Innovation will be watching this project closely to see what it will mean for the future of renewable electricity here. United Airlines has committed to using sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) for 3% of its total fuel out of its Chicago O'Hare hub by the end of 2024. This commitment will be meaningful to the development of the SAF industry. SAF has the potential to be a meaningful industry in Louisiana due to our historic role in refining fuels and producing biomass that can be feedstock.
