This summer — forever to be remembered as “Brat Summer” — Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX and Chappell Roan hit the zeitgeist, and despite their unique sounds, all three women target very similar audiences. What we aim to understand through our data in Luminate’s Artist & Genre Tracker (collected in August 2024) is who their music resonates with as well as how their audiences differ. While Gen Z are Chappell Roan’s largest fan group at 51%, Millennials are Charli XCX’s largest fan group at 35% and Sabrina Carpenter has a strong mix of both groups with 31% Gen Z and 34% Millennial. As the global music industry continues to evolve, the shift from Ad-Supported tiers to Premium subscriptions becomes more vital for increasing average revenue per user (ARPU). August data reveals that Emmy nominations lead to significant spikes in viewership. A standout example is Hacks, which experienced an impressive surge in minutes watched following the awards (see graph below). Baby Reindeer and Shōgun also saw notable shifts in their viewership trends after their Emmy wins.
