NYU Tisch opens the doors to new students at the NYU Tisch Martin Scorsese Virtual Production Center Jose Antunes reports for ProVideo Coalition NYU students now have a leading-edge production facility in which to learn, as the fully functional Virtual Production stage will serve as a training platform and a cutting-edge commercial Virtual Production studio. Rosanne Limoncelli, PhD, Senior Director of Filmmaking Technologies at NYU Tisch, the internal driving force for the project, explains, “The reason I really wanted to do this program is that I kept hearing from designers, directors, and cinematographers that there are not enough people with experience in Virtual Production that we can hire. We aim to help bridge that gap and introduce new talent into the industry.” As the lead systems integrator, AbelCine led the entire facility’s production and broadcast systems build and worked with partner Lux Machina on the virtual production integration. AbelCine also outfitted the facility with ARRI ALEXA 35 cameras, ZEISS Supreme Prime lenses, and an integrated lighting grid featuring ARRI SkyPanels for the virtual production stage. “At AbelCine, we pride ourselves on supporting the next generation of creatives, which is why we’re so excited to have NYU Tisch located within the vibrant Industry City campus,” says Pete Abel, CEO & Co-Founder. The Virtual Production Stage is a 180° LED volume measuring 26′ deep x 41′ wide x 17′ high on a 3,500-square-foot soundstage with innovative mobile workstations. As part of the high-end technical specification, ROE Visual Black Pearl 2V2 panels were selected utilizing the Megapixel Helios LED processing platform. Lux Machina’s custom-developed ARCA media servers power the stage. They are optimized for Virtual Production and can switch between multiple content rendering platforms, including pre-installed Pixera licenses (AV Stumpfl). The NYU Center has also been outfitted with Vicon’s Shōgun entertainment market software and 40 Vicon cameras: the combination of the two provides a state-of-the-art motion capture system for virtual production. Lux Machina has long been considered one of the leading innovators and proponents of Virtual Production. Co-Founder Zach Alexander, comments on the recent expansion of business into the educational environment: "We need to educate the next round of professionals in the industry-standard technologies and workflows that are used daily on film, television, and live productions worldwide.” Britainne Pedersen, Senior Producer, elaborates, “The importance of education in Virtual Production is that we allow students to access a body of knowledge and a skill set that Lux Machina has been developing over the last 12 years. Students don’t have to start at zero. They can join us where we are now, we can level up the industry, and build the next version of this technology together.” Read in full: https://lnkd.in/euPEz8tg

You may have heard this hot hot goss, but I’m thrilled to finally share the news about the newly opened NYU Tisch Martin Scorsese Virtual Production Center that I’ve been developing with Lux Machina Consulting since joining the company. It’s incredibly rewarding to see all our hard work pay off, knowing that this center will help shape how filmmakers use virtual production as a tool to enhance storytelling, not just as a technical solution. This marvelous journey wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of Sang Jin Bae, Rosanne Limoncelli, PhD, and Matthew Esmaelzada. From design to equipment studies, procurement, installation, training, and deployment—we accomplished it all together. And I have to give a huge shout-out to the LuxMC team—working with them made the entire process not only seamless but also incredibly fun. Their creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork turned this project into an absolute joy! (Roll credits: Devin Lyons, Zach Alexander, Kristin Turnipseed, Poom Wattanapan, India Vadher-Lowe, Cody Luensman, Marvi Sanchez, Kara Lundie, Emilia Page, Dominique Moxie, Vlad Simion, Jake Alexander, Rebecca Perry) I also want to extend a special shoutout to our friends, David Imlau, Olivia Farrar, Mitchell Whitmore, who were instrumental with camera tracking & LED for their invaluable contributions. This space is truly special, and I can’t wait to see the incredible talent it attracts. More soon!

Loved hearing about the movie from the other panelists including our friends at THE THIRD FLOOR Inc., Johnson Thomasson and Suzanne Cipolletti, and Jason Davis of Lux Machina Consulting Machina. It is sad that we have to say au revoir to the officer and gentleman, Systems Technical Director, Mr James Valpy, "Valpy" to us. James is off, not to another job in the industry, but to work with his brother on his whisky business back home in Scotland. We all have many wonderful words, as we all wish him all the very best in his new (fermenting liquor) chapter, but we'll leave the last official words and quotable reference to Wyatt Bartel "I have worked with James Valpy for over 3 years now and he is one of the most dedicated and hard working people I know, with such a tremendous knowledge base within him. He is a fun person to get a drink with, because he will make you laugh. He is a great colleague to work shoulder to shoulder with, because he cares about the work he's doing. He is a great manager because he is the epitome of someone who wants the best for those around him. As our director of technology in the UK and our lead manager of that office, Valpy takes on a large load of responsibilities every day: from designing and building systems, to helping his colleagues with their needs and making sure they're looked after. He is a brilliant man, and seeing the care he has for those around him makes him a great man."

This last week Megalopolis was released the theaters/cinemas globally. Lux Machina's Head of Production Kyle Olson reports: "Seeing the film brought back memories of our time on set with the incredible Lux Atlanta crew. Collaborating with Francis Ford Coppola, one of the most iconic filmmakers of our time, was truly a dream come true for all of us who live and breathe cinema. Being part of such a historic project felt like being part of something larger than ourselves, and I couldn't be prouder of the work we did. A dedicated team from across the globe also supported our Atlanta-based crew, turning this into a truly collective effort. Thank you all for your dedication, your talent, and the passion you bring to this craft we all love."
