  • A Message from Organizations Committed to Advancing LGBTQIA2S+ Freedom Beyond the 2024 Elections Our LGBTQIA2S+ community has risen again and again to meet moments that have challenged our rights, our humanity, and our freedom. Today is no different. Ours is a long history of never backing down from a fight for our rights. United in our strength, during the most difficult of times, we have pushed forward and achieved significant progress across the decades. From the early days of the Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis, to the Stonewall Uprising and HIV/AIDS activism, to achieving marriage equality and anti-discrimination protections in the workplace, to the fight for transgender rights, and beyond, we march on. For every member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and for those who support us: We’ve got this. We’ve got us. No matter who you are, where you live, or the outcome of yesterday’s election, today we are an LGBTQIA2S+ community united. Together, across races, places, genders, and abilities, we have shown up for each other by organizing, mobilizing, and casting our ballots for the freedom to be ourselves. Our work continues. Election outcomes at national, state, and local levels will impact our health, our safety, and our rights as LGBTQIA2S+ people and families. Despite anti-LGBTQIA2S+ efforts to divide our communities, and particularly severe attacks against transgender people and LGBTQIA2S+ youth, we have succeeded in moving a few steps closer toward equity and justice for our community. In particular, we celebrate the election of the first openly transgender person to U.S. Congress, Rep. Sarah McBride (Del.), as well as out lawmakers U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (Wis.), U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson (Texas), and State Rep. Wick Thomas (Mo.), and cementing the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in California, Colorado, and Hawaii. Across the country, LGBTQIA2S+ organizations and advocates engaged and educated voters, made calls, sent texts, and knocked on doors to ensure every voter had the information necessary to cast a ballot. Every single conversation reflected our commitment to vote for our families, our freedoms, and our futures. We know that so much more work lies ahead of us. Yet as an LGBTQIA2S+ movement, we will continue to work towards what we always have: a country where all LGBTQIA2S+ people are safe, seen, and accepted for who we truly are, without exception. We are here together, and we will move forward. We’ve got this. We’ve got us.

  • The Trevor Project's crisis services saw a nearly 200% increase in election-related calls on November 3rd and 4th compared to the few days prior, as LGBTQ youth, our youth, reported that they were anxious about the election outcomes. Now that we know the election results, all of us are faced with answering how we will show up for the queer and trans youth not just in San Francisco but also, inevitably, for the youth and their families who will come here seeking a chance at freedom, opportunity, and community. For 36 years, LYRIC Center for LGBTQQ+ youth has been here for queer and trans young people, providing access to life-saving health resources, housing navigation support, stipends that offer a basic level of income as they pursue their dreams, and identity-affirming programs that allows them to let their guards down and be their beautiful, brilliant selves. Our work will stay the same but we know the demand for our programs will increase. Join us today and commit to showing up for our youth. Today. Tomorrow. Always. https://lnkd.in/ghfGEn3m

🏳️🌈 According to a 2023 survey from the C.D.C., roughly 3.3 percent of high school students identify as transgender and another 2.2 percent are questioning their gender identity. Unfortunately, they also found that these students experience higher rates of bullying, sadness, and suicidality. Here at LYRIC, we believe that school should be a safe place for all young people-- regardless of their sexuality or gender identity. LYRIC is proud to offer Q-Groups in 30 middle and high schools across SFUSD. Q-Groups are a community space for LGBTQIA+ students to explore their identity, learn queer history, and exist without expectation. Having programs in place like Q-Groups can be a life-saving tool when it comes to protecting trans/gender non-conforming youth. This past Friday, we marked a significant milestone for LYRIC: Center for LGBTQQ+ Youth - the reopening of the historic Purple House at 127 Collingwood Street! After completing the first phase of our capital campaign, we welcomed community leaders, supporters, and allies to celebrate this incredible achievement. 🎉 We were honored to have Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi join us, along with State Senator Scott Wiener, members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rafael Mandelman, Ahsha Safaí, President Aaron Peskin and many others who have tirelessly supported LYRIC’s mission to empower LGBTQQ+ youth. ✊ This project was about more than just a renovation. It was about expanding our footprint by 45% so that more young people could find a place where they feel safe, affirmed, and welcomed. The Purple House is a sanctuary and a symbol—a place where every queer and trans youth knows they belong. 🏳️🌈 With the recent upgrades, including a new ADA-accessible entrance, service kitchen, expanded meeting spaces, and improved air quality systems, we are ready to provide even more critical, identity-affirming services to youth from all backgrounds. 🌱 A heartfelt thank you to our incredible LYRIC board, staff, and capital campaign members for their unwavering dedication and hard work in bringing this vision to life. Your contributions have been invaluable in creating a space that truly embodies hope, resilience, and joy. 💜 To LYRIC youth: The Purple House is for you—a place to be free, feel supported, and empowered to thrive. 💪 We are excited for the future and the countless young lives that will continue to be touched by LYRIC in this welcoming and affirming space. 💜 #LGBTQYouth #CommunitySupport #PurpleHouse #LYRIC #YouthEmpowerment #SanFrancisco #LGBTQ #QueerYouth #TransYouth #SafeSpaces #Inclusion

In 2019 we began the long journey of raising millions of dollars for LYRIC: Center for LGBTQQ+ Youth. The famous “purple house” needed an upgrade, including more space to meet its growing demand. During the height of the pandemic, LYRIC’s capital campaign met regularly over Zoom as we all worked to raise funds to support this much needed renovation. Four years later, and with incredible support from our community, we celebrated the project’s completion. LGBTQ+ youth need safe, affirming spaces and LYRIC consistently meets this need. The organization — simply put — saves lives. It has been an honor to work with the incredible staff at LYRIC, everyone on the capital campaign committee, and my board of directors colleagues. I’m so privileged to have served as co-chair of the board and co-chair of capital campaign committee — a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And I’m so excited for LYRIC’s new space. If anyone wants a tour or wants to learn more, please let me know. Here’s to LYRIC and continuing to give LGBTQ+ youth hope, opportunity, and support in all the years to come.
