In 2009, the House and Senate unanimously passed a resolution to recognize one day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October, as specifically devoted to metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Of the almost 4 million US people living with a history of breast cancer (all stages), an estimated 155,000 have Stage IV breast cancer. In conjunction with Filipino History Month, we're highlighting the strength of the Filipino spirit. In the United States, Filipino women often present with more advanced breast cancers than White women, but experience better breast cancer‐specific survival, according to a 2023 article in Cancer Medicine. We are so excited to highlight Coach Monique Wilson! Monique is passionate about educating, empowering, and motivating women to prioritize their health and advocate for themselves in breast cancer awareness. Monique is a resident of Leesburg, Georgia, born and raised in Newark, NJ. She has been married to her husband Freddreck for 26 years, and they have a son, and two lovely granddaughters aged 4 and 12. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration and a Master of Arts in Ministry. Currently, she works as the Lung Watch Screening & Survivorship Data Coordinator for Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, GA, where she has been employed for 19 years. For the past six years, she has been working in her role with the Cancer Center. She is a peer mentor through After Breast Cancer Diagnosis (ABCD) and volunteer help line with Share Cancer Support. Monique is a breast cancer survivor of 8 years, licensed minister, 2023 Project Lead graduate through National Breast Cancer Coalition and the 2023 Elevated Ambassador with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. She is a Cancer Wellness Coach, a community advocate where she leads the Young Survivor Coalition (YSC) as the GA State Leader and serves as the President of the SWGA Chapter of Sisters Network, Inc. Monique is currently offering coaching for all individuals and some free coaching sessions for breast cancer survivors.
