When John Merrick opened a chain of barbershops in Durham, N.C., Black Americans had shorter life expectancies than whites, typically earned lower wages, and were more likely to endure financial hardships. While these inequalities made them potentially risky life insurance customers, they also meant that Black families needed funds to cover final expenses and provide financial stability during times of loss. Building on his financial success and using his connections as a barber, Merrick co-founded the North Carolina Mutual and Provident Association (later North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co.) with Aaron M. Moore in 1898. Merrick led the company during a phase of meteoric growth as its income increased from a few hundred dollars in 1899 to more than $250,000 in 1910. By 1918, North Carolina Mutual had more than $1 million in insurance in force and was the largest Black-owned insurance firm in the nation.
