Picture this: you're finally on your long-awaited holiday. Your out-of-office message is on. You're looking out from a lounge chair at the scenic landscape of your dreams. It's hot, but not too hot. Someone has just brought you a cool drink. And next to you: the book you've been saving to crack open for exactly this moment. You start reading, and that all-too-familiar feeling creeps in. The first few pages aren't as you expected, but you persevere – surely it will get better. After an hour or so of reading, you're despairing. The book is just not for you. Many of us continue slogging through books we don't like, whether out of stubbornness ("I've looked forward to this book for ages; I must enjoy it"), guilt ("Maybe the problem is me, not the book) or obligation ("My friend recommended this to me, if I don't like it what will she say?"). But reading is supposed to be a pleasurable activity, done during our leisure time. You wouldn't continue watching a bad TV show or film for vague reasons, so why should you for a book? For freelance journalist Callum Bains, learning to abandon a book "demands its own quiet-confidence; enough self-understanding to recognise something isn't for you … and somehow, it tastes all the sweeter". Rip off Britain / Broken Britain Dear Keir Starmer, You come in to power on a mandate for change! How about making a change to Councils and Government departments ripping off normal hard working citizens for no reason?? I recently drove to Bristol Airport to pick my sister up and unbeknown to me crossed 100 metres in to a new clean air zone because I don’t live in bristol and was unaware of the rules or the zone, I received a fine of £100 or so. As I didn’t agree with the fine I didn’t pay it. I was sent some letters but wanted to go to court to discuss it, as I didn’t feel I had done anything wrong. The government / or the council made a change to a route that I’ve always used for Free, to the airport & didn’t inform me. My telepathy wasn’t working that day and so I then ended up with a fine. I wanted my chance to discuss this situation in court. Whilst I’m waiting for news of court proceedings I receive a letter stating the fine is now £270. I refuse to pay it as I wanted my day in court to discuss this matter further and stake my claim! Then one day I get presented with an enforcement officer at my house, who clamps my car and prevents me from being able to go to work unless I pay him £618. Basically bullying me in to paying £618! I said I was waiting for my day in court to discuss this matter & he says the court case has already been decided. So basically I have no option to put across my case & I’m being bullied in to paying £618 for a drive of 100 meters or so through the new clean air zone! Do you think this is fair and just? This sort of thing happens all the time to fellow British citizens & I think it’s an absolute disgrace! How can a £100 fine justifiably turn in to a £618 fine for a simple mistake? How can a civil society actually justify given a fine for a simple mistake in the first place???? Surely there should be some grace period for people who don’t know or haven’t been informed of these changes, and surely there should be some cap on fines so they don’t escalate in to astronomical sums of money! Hard working people of this world should not be ripped off & bullied by the system! Surely there’s a better way! If anyone from #KeirStarmer ‘s team, #BristolCouncil or anyone else wants to respond to this message please feel free to dm me. I’m going to be posting it on a number of accounts & platforms as I’m not sure Kier is on LinkedIn but hopefully someone somewhere who cares about preventing hard working people from being ripped off or wants to try & repair #BrokenBritain and is in a position to do something about it might see it & pass it on or get in touch!
