Ahhhhh sleep. For a very long time, in the not-so-distant past, you eluded me. So many things can keep you at bay: anxiety, stress, alcohol, caffeine, diet, sleep schedule, environment, screen time, and the list goes on. These make you a formidable opponent. However, sleep MUST become your friend, not your opponent. The importance of this relationship cannot be underestimated as it directly impacts your physical, mental, and cognitive health. "I'll sleep when I am dead" is a dangerous attitude. For many years, my sleep was whacky, unpredictable, and under-appreciated. When I was younger, the effects were manageable. When I hit 50 a few years back...not so much. With COVID in full force, I had just started Maavee, a technology company focused on health and wellness. I was excited and stressed, both of which made sleep difficult. One of our early curated partners is Sleep Cycle. We vet every brand and explain in detail why we love each. So, I started testing the Sleep Cycle app. My life changed in the 10 days that followed. Through the comprehensive monitoring and generative AI summaries, I became instantly informed. I learned that I snore (badly). Of course, I did not believe it, but the app quite literally recorded and played back my nights. It was so horrifying that I shared it with my doctor. The next thing you know, I am in a sleep study, which confirmed that I have severe sleep apnea. It didn’t make sense—I was healthy, fit, and active. Alas, it was true, and I started a new chapter in sleep hygiene. My point: we must take our well-being into our own hands, seek data and insights about how our body is performing, and take the small actions necessary to optimize its performance. Not only will your present be better, but your future may just be longer. At Maavee, we make it easy. Maavee Moment... Here’s a one-minute wellness hack: you are just one minute away from feeling true relief. One of the greatest keys to well-being is stress reduction. Unfortunately, we live in one of the most stressful times in history. The American Lung Association estimates we take more than 20,000 breaths a day (that's 7.5 million each year). We also spend a lot of our time on laptops and phones. Did you know that most of us don’t breathe when we type or (doom) scroll? It's called screen apnea. Next time you're typing, take notice -- you may not be breathing. I build presentations and write emails all day. My breath output is greatly compromised. I imagine you aren’t much different from me. Holding your breath for long stretches doesn’t help your stress levels. I want to share some quick wisdom. It's not brilliant, but it is free: JUST BREATHE! Give it a try right now... 👀 Find a comfortable position with your back straight. 🌬️ Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. 🫁 Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4. 🫁 Hold your breath for a count of 7. 🌬️ Exhale through your mouth, making a whoosh sound, for a count of 8. 🔁 Repeat for a total of four cycles. The immediate result: ✔️ Sense of calm ✔️ Lower anxiety ✔️ Reduced heart rate Do this several times a day consistently and you may see an even greater impact on overall stress and sleep, among other things. Again, it's FREE! This little wellness hack helps me immensely. I was recently introduced to Wendy Suzuki, a professor of neuroscience and psychology at NYU, through a podcast on which she discussed brain health. She is also the author of several books including “Healthy Brain, Happy Life” and “Good Anxiety: Harnessing The Power of The Most Misunderstood Emotion.” Checkout this powerful podcast with Steven Bartlett and Dr. Wendy: https://lnkd.in/gtb_HiPF One point that really caught my attention: Dr. Wendy shared powerful insights about how to keep your brain healthy and why it’s so important. So many things affect the brain including sleep, stress, diet, coffee, exercise, mindfulness, and the list goes on. At 47m:48s in the podcast, I learned that our brains shrink from loneliness and how important human connection is to our brain health, happiness, and longevity. The good news: all human connection counts towards a healthy brain! It is not only intense, intimate relationships that matter. Saying hello to the barista working on your double espresso, waving to your neighbor in the morning, an SMS to your parents to let them know you’re thinking about them, smiling at the person walking towards you on the street. It all counts!
