Lateral partner hiring in California has evolved, with the 25 most profitable law firms reducing their recruitment in the state by 27% over the past two years, according to data from Leopard Solutions. In his recent article for Bloomberg Law, Roy Strom dives into the factors influencing this shift, including changes in the tech market and a limited pool of high-impact talent. Jon Truster, a partner in our New York office, shared his perspective: “While this hasn’t been a devastating slowdown, it’s gone on for a long time. So, a lot of the hires that were made, certainly not all, have been based on ... people feeling unsettled in their current roles.” Read the full article here*: https://lnkd.in/e6GDVbnT *Note this does sit behind a pay wall and a subscription may be needed to read the full article.

In his latest article for The Recorder, Samson Amore examines how lateral partner hiring among Am Law 50 and top U.K.-founded firms in the San Francisco Bay Area has evolved in 2024. Macrae’s Partner Trends data reveals a 7% decrease in moves compared to last year, with 40 hires through September. Sarah Morris, a partner in our Bay Area offices, shared, “Last year was [also] pretty slow, especially if you compare it to 2021, which was the biggest year we've had... I think it's pretty notable that we're at about 40 [lateral hires] this year through September.” While certain areas like energy and litigation have remained steady, the Bay Area has seen notable shifts in IP and corporate lateral hiring. Aebra Coe’s latest article for Law360 explores how the dynamics of prestige among law firms are evolving amid increased lateral movement and a rapidly shifting legal landscape. As Sarah Morris, a partner in our Bay Area offices, shared, “It's still very challenging to move into and out of the ranks of the most prestigious law firms. There's a handful of firms at the top, but others are scrambling to get there.” Drawing from Macrae’s recent Partner Trends data, the piece highlights how firms leverage lateral partner hires to bring in prestigious matters and maintain a competitive edge. As the industry faces disruptive changes, those firms that can embrace innovation and adapt quickly are well-positioned to rise through the ranks. Our partner, Lauren Drake, shared insights during the "War for Talent in Full Bloom" panel, discussing the competitive landscape for lateral hiring, evolving compensation dynamics, and how top-tier firms are now more active in the market.
