On Thursday, Donald Trump pledged that he would “𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑛 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑢𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑙𝑑.” To do so, he said, he would cut the corporate tax rate to 15% from 21% for companies that make their products in the U.S., and expand tariffs on foreign-made goods. The proposal raised questions from economists, corporate leaders, and others. Among them: 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑠 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑛-𝑚𝑎𝑑𝑒? In this episode of The U.S. Manufacturing Workforce Podcast, I speak with Brandon Acker, President of Titan Abrasive Systems, about what made in the USA really means: Podcast: https://lnkd.in/ep_fvYRh WSJ News: https://lnkd.in/eGWfAxgh

A congressional probe of Chinese-built cargo cranes deployed at ports throughout the U.S. has found communications equipment that doesn’t appear to support normal operations, fueling concerns that the foreign machines may pose a covert national-security risk. 🚢 Last month, the Biden administration announced it would invest more than $20 billion over the next five years to replace foreign-built cranes with U.S.-manufactured ones. The administration also rolled out a suite of maritime cybersecurity measures, which comes amid rising fears that Chinese hackers have been pre-positioning themselves to disrupt American critical infrastructure in the event of open hostilities, such as a military conflict over Taiwan. 📰 The Wall Street Journal: https://lnkd.in/ewnmra9K

🚢 America’s once-robust shipbuilding industry has shrunk. It no longer produces any significant number of commercial oceangoing ships. Several shipyards have only one big customer, the Navy, and those shipyards are often battling worker shortages, backlogs, a paucity of suppliers, and cost overruns. Today, America’s shipyards are struggling to keep up with peacetime demand. Submarines are bogged down by maintenance delays and new ones are behind schedule. There isn’t enough trained labor, dry docks are in short supply, and in the case of some critical components, only a handful of vendors are still standing. This is especially troubling, U.S. strategists say, in light of what the Ukraine conflict has shown: Wars can last a long time, and fighting them requires industry. America’s weapons factories have struggled to keep up with Ukraine’s battlefields. Its munition makers—and shipyards—aren’t ready for a war with China. 📰 The Wall Street Journal: 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑦𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑠, 𝑈.𝑆. 𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑎𝑦: https://lnkd.in/e--B_wxd 🎙️ 𝐏𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭: 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑎ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑠 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑒𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐷𝑒𝑓𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒'𝑠 𝐹𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑁𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑒𝑓𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒 𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑦: https://lnkd.in/dp5DE3JW #America #Manfuacturing #China

⚠️ 5,000 UAW members went on strike today at the General Motors assembly plant in Texas that builds the U.S. automaker's profitable full-size sport utility vehicles. The workers at Arlington Assembly make some of GM's most profitable vehicles, the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade. This significant expansion brings the total number of UAW members on strike at the Big Three automakers to over 45,000, on day 40 of the labor dispute. With that, UAW has now shut down three of the most profitable auto factories in the world, including Ford Motor Company's Kentucky Truck heavy duty pickup factory and Chrysler-owner Stellantis' Ram pickup plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan. In a recent episode of The U.S. Manufacturing Workforce podcast, we speak with Marc Robinson, Economist and former internal consultant and strategist at GM, and he shared his insights about the 2019 strike at GM, how this strike was predictable, and how long this strike could last based on game theory. It's a great interview. Tune in below. 🎙️ Full Podcast Interview with Marc Robinson -> UAW vs Big Three Automakers: Game Theory Predictions: https://hubs.li/Q026BN310 📧 Podcast email signup: https://hubs.li/Q026B_lY0 📰 Reuters News -> UAW strikes GM's Escalade factory, turning up pressure for higher wages: https://hubs.li/Q026B_7S0 #UAW #Stellantis #Strike #StandUpUAW
