Magnolia Mill School
Mental Health Care
A learning community empowering bright-minded students 14-17 to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.
About us
Magnolia Mill School is a learning community that empowers bright-minded young students to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Our mission is to encourage each student to realize and embody their inherent self-worth through the connective, therapeutic development of core competencies, self-confidence, and skills that last a lifetime. Through much research, our team has developed a curriculum that supports students in building Eight Core Competencies that minimize treatment recidivism and increase success in young adulthood. As healing is a family process, we have created Robust and Comprehensive Family Programming. Our family-focused programming ensures that the support extends beyond the individual, fostering community and shared growth. We have truly individualized our programming by empowering students to partner with their therapists to develop their treatment plans from day one.

Have you heard of hobby horsing? 🤔🐴This quirky activity has been gaining traction around the world. Combining athleticism, creativity, and a love for horses, hobby horsing has evolved into a respected sport, especially in countries like Finland, where it has a surprisingly large and dedicated following. Hobby horsing involves participants mimicking the movements and techniques used in traditional equestrian sports, often with stick horses. From dressage to show jumping, hobby horse riders perform various routines and even compete with surprising skill and dedication. By popular request, we recently tried it with our equestrian jumps. Here's an action shot of our Adventure Director, Anne, with some impressive athleticism on her jumps! 🏇 #HobbyHorsing #ShowJumping

We were very fortunate to maintain power and water on campus with the aid of generators through the recent hurricane, allowing us to keep a sense of normalcy and community. With the help of incredible staff, we quickly resumed regular programming and got involved in volunteer projects. Recently, our students helped sort donations of clothes and food to support those affected in western North Carolina. #Volunteering #CommunityService #NorthCarolina

Our location offers our students the best of Asheville's city amenities alongside beautiful outdoor locations. Canoeing on the lovely French Broad River was a well-loved recreational activity for our students this summer. "I recognize that there is a segment of students that are often missed in our world, whether they are sensitive, anxious, or they are just struggling with learning differences in how they approach the world. I feel like there is a great opportunity to help these kids." - Shawn Farrell, M.Ed, Executive Director

As we near the end of summer, we've been focusing on soaking up the beautiful weather and spending time on the waterways! On one of our weekly outings, students participated in a canoeing trip on a flat portion of the French Broad River. The students chose the goals of teamwork, fun, and momentum to guide our experience. We had fun in the little moments on the river: swimming at lunch, making little drip sandcastles, and learning about the beautiful native plant with exploding seed pods (Jewelweed/Touch-me-not: Impatiens Capensis). Did you know that the leaves and sap of Jewelweed can relieve the itch from poison oak and ivy? Happy (nearing) the end of Summer! #Canoeing #GetOutside #RecTherapy #JewelWeed #NorthCarolina
