Updates

  • Thank you to Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce for welcoming MCCS President David Daigler this week to talk about all the ways Maine's community colleges are expanding workforce training opportunities statewide. We've vastly expanded short-term workforce training programs (on track to train 100,000 people by 2030!) ... adding seats to popular certificate and degree programs like nursing ... expanding existing trades curricula to include tech innovations like e-vehicles and wind power .... reaching out to 6K high school students a year through our early college program ... and more! At the heart of it all is a committment to listening to and partnering with the state's employers to make workforce training affordable, relevant, and accesible. (Thank you to photographer Wohler & Co.!)

  • Meet Amber! Another outstanding employee at Maine’s community colleges. Amber Tatnall serves as the director of institutional effectiveness and accreditation at York County Community College. Amber's pivotal role involves furnishing vital data to facilitate informed decision making within college leadership. Additionally, she oversees crucial responsibilities such as NECHE accreditation, and IPEDS reporting. Amber serves as the chairperson of the departmental leadership team, co-chair of the strategic planning committee, and actively participated in professional development initiatives such as Anthology and the National Institute for Student Success. At the heart of her endeavors lies a profound dedication to student success. Amber's initiatives in promoting student mental health and working to establish an early alert system have been truly transformative. In addition, she has generously organized two open mic nights, providing students with a platform to showcase their talents and fostering an inclusive environment. Amber's positive demeanor, tireless work ethic, and genuine commitment to advancing continuous improvement resonate throughout our institution, leaving a lasting impact. “I’ve worked for YCCC since 2001, in a variety of roles, from librarian, to associate academic dean, to director of institutional effectiveness,” Amber said. “In each of those positions, I’ve had the honor of playing some small role in helping students achieve their goals and improve their lives. Over the years, I have seen so many students grow, overcome challenges, and transform their futures. Working at YC has been incredibly rewarding and I am reminded daily of the power of education and the impact it can have on students, their families, and their communities. Even after 23 years, I still love coming in to work! Thank you, Amber! We are proud to work with you.

  • Please join us on November 7 at the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce's Eggs and Issues, featuring MCCS President David Daigler! David will share how Maine's community colleges have rebuilt Maine’s talent pipeline with a new short-term workforce training platform that continues to evolve. These are tailored training programs that meet a business's immediate needs, delivering the skills Maine's businesses crave - when needed, where needed. These new programs target new employees, career-changers, and incumbent workers so they get the skills they need *right now* - and they’re stackable so workers looking to keep going can continue their education and earn certificates or degrees. We won't wish our way out of the workforce shortage. It's time for bold strokes and decisive action. With early college, Free College, and custom-built short-term training, Maine's community colleges are all in. Are you a compact member with MCCS's The Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce? You won't want to miss this!

  • Meet David! Another outstanding employee at Maine’s community colleges. David Wyman is the senior programmer/analyst at Northern Maine Community College. He is coordinating the college’s transition to a new Anthology platform and has been a steady and positive leader on campus. In addition to his Institutional Research duties, David has gone above and beyond the call to ensure that NMCC's focus remains on moving to Anthology in the most efficient way possible. He is an educator at heart and has taken the time to work individually with employees as well as in small groups to keep people engaged and informed about the project. David is an outstanding member of the NMCC team and a contributor to the MCCS process to move to our next student information system. “Every day is different, and the work is satisfying,” David said, about what he likes most about working at NMCC. “I appreciate my co-workers who consistently go above and beyond. I like the fact that while our college is comparatively small, our achievement rivals much larger institutions because of the dedicated people who work there.” It is people like David who make NMCC a great place to work! Thank you, David! We are proud to work with you.

  • Meet Anne! Another outstanding employee at Maine’s community colleges. Anne St.Pierre is a passionate educator at Central Maine Community College. Anne began her journey at CMCC as the TRIO director, progressed to associate academic dean, and now holds the positions of department chair and faculty in the human services degree program. As a first-generation college student herself, Anne is dedicated to guiding students along their higher education paths and inspiring them to achieve their greatest aspirations. Believing that students benefit from faculty with real-world experience, Anne is not just about textbooks and classes; she is actively involved in counseling practice and consultation, specializing in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) and providing psychological support to frontline allied health providers and first responders. By integrating her expertise and experience into both the curriculum and the classroom, students benefit from her real-life insights. In her spare time, Anne can be found teaching dog sports such as conformation handling (think: Best in Show); and her competitive teams strut their stuff at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Yes, you could say she’s literally gone to the dogs! When she’s not helping students develop into compassionate, skilled professionals or coaching future canine champions, she is busy creating community partnerships and supporting an amazing team of part-time faculty who bring diverse real-world experience and passion to the classroom. Together, they create a vibrant and inclusive learning environment for human services students. “What I enjoy most about working at Central Maine Community College is the supportive and welcoming atmosphere created by dedicated colleagues and staff who are committed to helping our students succeed,” Anne said. “I feel privileged to be part of such an incredible team!” Thank you, Anne! We are proud to work with you.

  • Meet Kathy! Another outstanding employee at Maine’s community colleges. Kathy Crise serves as chair of the computer technology department at Eastern Maine Community College. Her career began as an electronic technician in the US Navy where she honed her technology skills, began supervising work groups, and conducting training. Kathy earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at the University of Maine and then went back to school to earn her associate degree in computer systems technology at EMCC, the program she now chairs.
