🚧 Project Spotlight: South City Intersection and Green Space Revitalization 🌳 Through Accelerate Memphis, the large-scale investment in South City is transforming the intersection at Mississippi Blvd. and East Georgia Ave., along with the creation of vibrant public green spaces. The goal? To make this area safer, more accessible, and welcoming for all Memphians. This project includes essential railroad underpass improvements, safety upgrades along Lauderdale St. and Mississippi Blvd., and even the integration of public art installations. These enhancements boost safety and mobility and establish visually distinctive gateways to South City's community landmarks. It has become her favorite project for Sarah Dowda, the project manager overseeing the construction. "I love that we’re transforming a dangerous intersection into an intersection that will now be safer for drivers and pedestrians alike. Transforming the underused space into something beautiful and inviting is an added benefit. This project’s artistic enhancements and green spaces bring real value to the community. It’s about more than just infrastructure… it’s creating a space where people can gather and take pride in their neighborhood." Key improvements like improved street crossings and curb extensions calm traffic and improve pedestrian safety, while new outdoor seating and a pedestrian plaza bring life to the streetscape. With upgraded lighting, bike lanes, and additional green spaces, the South City community will enjoy a safer intersection and a dynamic place to connect and celebrate. 🌟 Many thanks to all who made this project possible! Have you ever walked or biked in your community and felt unsafe? It's a common concern, but thoughtful design can change that! Last month, we discussed design factors that contribute to creating safer, more livable streets, including slowing down cars, providing protected spaces, improving visibility, and optimizing traffic signals. Today, let's examine an early-stage site from Accelerate Memphis—Macon and A Street—that incorporates these principles. This project includes: 🔹 Curb Bump-Outs & Concrete Ramps: Safer crossings for pedestrians. 🔹 Street Trees: Shade and a buffer between pedestrians and traffic. 🔹 One-Way Conversion with Dedicated Bike Lane: Enhanced safety and traffic flow. 🔹 Signage Improvements: Clear, visible signs to guide pedestrians and cyclists. 🔹 Amenity Connections: A dedicated, safe route for cyclists and walkers to connect to amenities like the Shelby Farms Greenline and other nearby destinations. These elements work together to create a safer, more comfortable, and more connected environment for everyone. What other features of this project do you think contribute to creating safer streets? Share your thoughts below! Thanks to Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development, Kimley-Horn, Montgomery Martin Contractors, and Gresham Smith for making this project happen! #Memphis #AccelerateMemphis #activatingmemphis3point0 #SustainableCities #UrbanPlanning #SaferStreets #LivableCommunities #DesignMatters

Learn about the City’s first award-winning bioswale! Bioswales in Memphis Bioswales are landscape elements designed to concentrate and filter stormwater runoff, integrated with native plants for more efficient drainage and to support wildlife and pollinators. This innovative stormwater management system is part of the Accelerate Memphis project, a $200 million initiative to improve the quality of life for residents. The project also includes streetscape improvements along McLemore Avenue in the historic Soulsville neighborhood in South Memphis. This year, the McLemore Ave Street Improvement project was recognized nationally with an Award of Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies. Benefits of Bioswales Bioswales provide a number of benefits, including: -Improved water quality: Bioswales help to remove pollutants from stormwater runoff, such as sediment, nutrients, and bacteria. -Flood control: Bioswales help to reduce flooding by slowing down the flow of stormwater runoff and allowing it to infiltrate into the ground. -Habitat for wildlife: Bioswales provide habitat for a variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and frogs. This week, JT Malasri, PE and Stephen Edwards, PE presented at the APWA PWX conference, where they shared the story of implementing Accelerate Memphis, a transformative initiative for our city. In 2016, the City of Memphis embarked on a comprehensive planning process, which culminated in adopting Memphis 3.0, our first comprehensive master plan in 40 years. Guided by the vision of "Build Up, Not Out," this plan aims to lead Memphis toward a more prosperous and inclusive future over the next two decades. A critical component of this strategy is Accelerate Memphis, a $200 million investment program launched in 2021. Focused on revitalizing key neighborhoods and anchors, Accelerate Memphis is already positively impacting our city. At the conference, the team shared their insights and lessons from utilizing a construction manager at risk (CMAR) through our implementation of Accelerate Memphis: Activating Memphis 3.0, which launched during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Did you know that a CMAR can significantly reduce project durations by overlapping the preconstruction and construction phases? A CMAR also fosters early contractor engagement during the design process, ensuring constructability. Pricing estimates throughout the design and shifting the cost risk to the contractor can help keep your project within budget. This approach facilitates value engineering opportunities during the design phase, ensuring that when plans are approved, they are within budget and ready to be constructed. The team is grateful for the opportunity to share their experiences with Accelerate Memphis. They hope their insights inspire other communities to pursue innovative solutions to infrastructure and community challenges. #AccelerateMemphis #Memphis3point0 #Infrastructure #CommunityDevelopment #Memphis #PWX2024

Creating Safer Streets: Design Factors That Make a Difference Earlier this month, we highlighted the importance of safe streets and the impact on the community's well-being. This week, let's explore some key design factors: Slower Speeds: Lower speed limits and traffic calming measures, such as road narrowing and raised crosswalks, are essential in reducing the risk of severe accidents, especially in residential areas and near schools. Protected Spaces: Providing dedicated bike lanes and wider sidewalks gives pedestrians and cyclists the space they need to travel safely. Visibility: Clear sightlines, well-lit streets, and reflective markings help everyone see and be seen, reducing the chance of collisions. Traffic Signals: Implementing smart signal timing that prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists can minimize vehicle conflicts. These are just a few examples of how thoughtful design can create safer streets for everyone. What other design factors do you think are important?
