In our conversations at Manos about how we wanted to do Healthcare Marketing differently, we kept going back to Hemant Taneja's 2019 Harvard Business Review article "The Era of 'Move Fast and Break Things' Is Over. One of my favorite jokes about dating is that if your parents are married, your goal is to get married, but if your parents are divorced your goal is not to get divorced. Taneja's concerns with some of the cavalier approaches tech giants have had with data is very relevant to healthcare: Genomics, data security, robotics, AI, AR/VR, 3D printing, new pharmaceuticals have potential and danger. Healthcare marketers have to have an impartial, careful approach that takes into account a world where the public and venture capital are less forgiving of mistakes. Taneja advocates a shift from disruption for disruption's sake to a model of responsible growth. We can agree on the problem, but we advocate more practical solutions. We like these solutions, but they're not entirely practical: E.g. Virtuous Products over Viable Products Great in theory, but we can't exactly audit every company we work for product safety like the FDA. Systemic Impact/DEI Initiatives Working with companies that have equal access to everyone doesn't always make sense, because some of the best products are deliberately not equitable. Concierge care is a great product but definitely not available to everyone. But they certainly help people. We see our role in healthcare marketing in two ways: A fully integrated approach - For many of the clients we work with, the consequences of improper messaging or misleading marketing are severe, and the value of the brand, and the importance of consumer trust comes first. We filter our messaging by the client, sales, marketing, PR, and industry experts, before a campaign is allowed to go live. Having all of these processes and people in house means that we can iterate much more quickly without sacrificing quality, and that we don't need a lot of back and forth with our clients and we don't have to use outside consultants.  Doing our due dilligence - While a marketing audit is a far cry from a clinical trial and FDA approval, we only work with companies whose products that satisfy our requirements for great evidence. The FDA’s new guidance on decentralized clinical trials (DCTs) presents huge opportunities to validate your product faster and more cost-effectively. Telehealth, local healthcare providers (HCPs), and digital health technologies (DHTs) were already permissible, but now the FDA has provided clear, structured guidelines to make these trials easier to manage. 1. 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬, 𝐋𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 The FDA encourages telehealth visits for trial participants where in-person interactions aren’t necessary. This approach allows you to reduce the costs and logistical complexities of site visits, accelerating trial timelines and cutting down on overhead. 2. 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 The FDA has issued specific guidance on the selection, verification, validation, and usability of DHTs. This ensures that tools like wearables and apps can be used to gather real-time data in compliance with regulatory standards, streamlining the evidence generation process. 3. 𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Decentralized trials improve recruitment by expanding access to diverse populations, including individuals with limited mobility or restricted access to traditional clinical trial sites.
