After reflecting on the recent election results, MAPS remains optimistic about the future of federal support for psychedelic research through agencies like the Veterans Administration and the National Institutes of Health. We urge the incoming administration to engage with diverse stakeholders—from federal and state agencies to local community advocates—to shape policies that genuinely serve the public interest and uphold rigorous standards for safety and ethics. Our commitment to fostering understanding, reducing stigma, ending the failed drug war, and advocating for equitable, safe access to psychedelic therapies remains steadfast. We look forward to collaborating with advocates nationwide to responsibly harness the transformative potential of psychedelics for the well-being of individuals and society at large. P.S. Regardless of your position on Question 4 or your political orientation, elections can be stressful. In this week's MAPS Bulletin, cognitive neuroscientist Alexandre Lehmann, Ph.D., takes us on a journey through the unique connection between music and psychedelics. From tribal rhythms in ancient ceremonies to MDMA-assisted therapy today, music has long served as a guide in altered states, helping individuals explore inner realms of healing and transformation. As we explore music’s potential to amplify psychedelics’ benefits, Lehmann envisions a future where these elements foster personal and communal healing. Today’s sessions and gatherings might draw on music’s power to deepen connection, reduce isolation, and rekindle a sense of belonging. Could Massachusetts’ Question 4 initiative be a turning point in ending the failed policies of the drug war? In an interview with Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP)’s Gina Giorgio, Rick Doblin shares his perspective on how this citizen-led ballot measure is part of a broader cultural shift. Rick emphasizes that Question 4 is not just about local policy—it’s a crucial step in a movement to end the damaging legacy of drug prohibition. He highlights how the U.S., once a major force in spreading strict prohibitionist policies worldwide, now has the chance to lead a reversal of the failed drug war. As more states pursue drug policy reform, how could this movement create a ripple effect that influences the rest of the world? 🚨BIG NEWS!🚨 Politico reported that Dr. Shereef Elnahal, Undersecretary for Health at the Department of Veterans Affairs, said the VA is willing to consider supporting Lykos Therapeutics in funding an additional Phase III trial for their psychedelic-assisted therapy aimed at treating PTSD. This follows the FDA’s rejection of Lykos' initial application, requiring more data on the treatment’s safety and effectiveness. Despite setbacks, the VA's openness to support could be a game-changer, reflecting a renewed focus on exploring innovative solutions for veterans' mental health. https://lnkd.in/gixhm3cr
