“The IEA's Special Report on Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions states that battery storage was the fastest-growing energy technology in 2023, with deployment more than doubling year on year. A total of 42 GW of battery storage was added globally. However, the rate at which battery storage is being rolled out does not match the growth in renewable energy capacity worldwide, which is resulting in volatile energy prices in countries with a high share of green energy on the grid.” Marauder Land Resources, LLC: Related links: ● “ ‘Football fields’ of batteries have helped Texas's grid when electricity demand is highest,” WFAA Dallas, 8/26/24: LINK: https://lnkd.in/dzD4WFCw ● “Giant batteries are a game changer,” Landon Schulze, LinkedIn, 10/3/24: LINK: https://lnkd.in/gzcKrw_J ● IEA Special Report on Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions: LINK: https://lnkd.in/gmY-Uejk ● Doug Sheridan on LinkedIn today unwinds how aging nat gas baseload & peaker plants are keeping the grid from failing from intermittent power sources, while getting no credit, revenue assurances or further investment/maintenance: “And how about the goofy fact that Ercot is having to use aging thermal plants—whose revenues have been cannibalized by the allowance of massive amounts of intermittent renewals on the system—that are kept on the system beyond their retirement dates in order to back up the growing mass of untrustworthy renewables? And then the older thermal units get called out by pundits like Lewin for being less reliable. Marauder Land Resources, LLC: Includes an extended discussion of AI and cloud data center power requirements below the fold: “Development increased more than sevenfold in two years, with the pipeline of new projects leveling off in the first half of 2024, a potential signal that the U.S. power grid cannot support development at a faster pace. “With the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, artificial intelligence-driven products and platforms became ubiquitous seemingly overnight, JLL said. The huge amount of computing power required by generative AI is having the greatest impact on data storage, followed by continued cloud growth. (. . .) “Power demand for computing is growing so intense that it threatens to strain the nation's electrical grid, sending users to remote locations where power is plentiful and preferably cheap. “Data center developers are working in Alabama, the Dakotas and Indiana, ‘traditionally states that wouldn't have data centers,’ Eades said. “A company called CalEthos plans a data center near the south shore of the Salton Sea in California's Imperial County. Electricity for the data center’s servers would come from the geothermal and solar plants built near the site in an area that has become known as Lithium Valley. That data center would cover land the size of 15 football fields and require power that could support 425,000 homes. “Data centers have long been big power users. But the specialized computer chips required for generative AI use far more electricity because they are designed to read through vast amounts of data. “The new chips also generate so much heat that even more power and water are needed to keep them cool. “By 2030, data centers could account for as much as 11% of U.S. power demand — up from 3% now, according to analysts at Goldman Sachs. Last week a deal was announced to reopen the infamous Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania in order to power Microsoft's data centers performing cloud computing and artificial intelligence programs. “The plant, the site of he nation’s worst commercial nuclear power accident in 1979, was closed five years ago because it was losing money. Microsoft has agreed to buy power from the plant for 20 years if regulators approve its revival.” #energy #energyindustry #renewables #renewableenergy #renewablepower #geothermal #geothermalenergy #BESS #electricity #electricgrid #powergrid #transmissionlines #ai #artificialintelligence #datacenter #cloudcomputing #battery #batterytech #Lithium https://lnkd.in/gJB8pbcz

Marauder Land Resources, LLC: Respectfully, if we're going to double electric grid capacity to the Permian Basin, that may be an excellent opportunity to use the flared natural gas redirected to baseload or peaker power plants: "A Texas commission unanimously on Thursday approved the Permian Basin Reliability Plan, which is designed to expand power grid infrastructure in the United States' largest oilfield to accommodate rapidly growing demand from the oil and gas industry." h/t G. “Naphtha Market Size Worth USD 409.5 Billion in 2032,” Emergen Research, 1/23/24: “The global naphtha market size was USD 282.0 Billion in 2022 and is expected to register a rapid revenue CAGR of 3.8% during the forecast period. Rising demand for naphtha from the petrochemical industry and increasing need for olefin-rich naphtha are key factors driving market revenue growth. “The primary feedstock utilized in the petrochemical industry is naphtha, which uses around half of the naphtha produced. In the petroleum industry, it is employed in the synthesis of aromatics and olefins, which include propylene, butadiene, ethylene, and benzene. (. . .) “The essential application for olefin-rich naphtha is as a feedstock for the manufacturing of excessive-octane and low-price diesel. The demand for low priced petrol is rising in each industrialized and developing international locations owing to rapid urbanization and increasing populace. Petroleum naphtha is a widely utilized solvent, which is used in a huge range of cleaning marketers. Asphalt, paints, and varnishes are also diluted with it. The dry cleansing industry also makes use of naphtha, which increases the requirement for naphtha.” Marauder Land Resources, LLC: A few add’l notes about naptha: ● Cargohandbook[dot]com, “Naptha” & source of image: LINK: https://lnkd.in/gj9rqhzF ● “Naptha,” Wikipedia: LINK: https://lnkd.in/gRM3CKJ7 ● Naptha commodity pricing has been burdened with backwardation or contango all year, but this problem is easing: “Naptha, Tradingeconomics[dot]com, 9/17/24 (with spot price ticker): LINK: https://lnkd.in/gZk35hxF “Naphtha futures have slightly rebounded to around $620 per tonne, after hitting over 12-month lows below $600 last week. This recovery aligns with gains in crude oil benchmarks, driven by ongoing disruptions in US Gulf oil infrastructure and expectations of a potential US interest rate cut. Nearly 20% of Gulf of Mexico oil production remains offline due to Hurricane Francine. Additionally, investors are increasingly betting on a more substantial 50-basis-point rate cut by the Federal Reserve, which could stimulate economic activity and boost oil demand. However, concerns about weakening demand persist, especially after Chinese data revealed the longest industrial slowdown since 2021, with investment figures falling short of expectations, casting doubt on China's ability to meet its 5% growth target. Meanwhile, Libyan oil exports have also seen a significant decline amid stalled UN-led talks over control of the country's central bank.” #energy #energyindustry #energypolicy #oilindustry #oilgas #oilandgas #natgas #naturalgas #shale #shaleoil #shalegas #commodities #refining #diesel #polymers #plastics #solvents #naptha #fuel #gasoline

“Until very recently, geothermal energy for commercial use has only been feasible in places where that heat naturally reaches the surface of the Earth, such as geysers and hot springs. For example, Iceland gets a quarter of its energy from geothermal energy. But Iceland is a geological anomaly. Globally, geothermal energy accounts for just 0.5% of renewable energy. “But now, the application of fracking technology borrowed from the oil and gas sector could totally revolutionize geothermal energy availability, and possibly even bring it to your own backyard. “Geothermal energy can be tapped anywhere and everywhere, if you have the will and the way to dig deep enough. And this could soon be possible at an economically viable scale through a method known as 'enhanced geothermal systems' which can tap into heat far, far below the ground. “According to a 2023 report from Esquire, this technology, adapted from hydraulic fracturing used in the oil and gas industry, will ‘allow us to exploit the energy underfoot across the country, all with a carbon impact that is vanishingly small compared to most sources we depend on now.’ These deep wells would pump out hot water, which can be used in turn to produce energy through various methods, before injecting that water back into the ground. “The potential for enhanced geothermal is massive - the Economist even projects that it could outperform nuclear energy output, while offering similar benefits.” (continued) Marauder Land Resources, LLC: Our previous posts about geothermal’s increased viability as an energy source: ● Please note: Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) focus on creating artificial fractures to access hot rock, whereas GPGS (e.g., the Meta projects) leverages natural fractures and pores in sand aquifers. ● New map shows vast potential for geothermal energy beneath entire US, 6/5/24: LINK: https://lnkd.in/g4sJajEJ ● Are Geothermal Title Exceptions the New Norm in Real Estate Transactions?, 7/26/24: LINK: https://lnkd.in/gRufhudu ● ERCOT could get its first geothermal project, 8/19/24: LINK: https://lnkd.in/gpAe3UA6 ● New Geothermal Energy Project to Support Our Data Centers, 8/27/24: LINK: https://lnkd.in/gEEMqCy9 ● U.S. Department of Energy Announces $31M for Projects to Improve Wellbore Construction and Advance Thermal Energy Storage, 8/27/24, h/t Curt Horne, CPL for this link: LINK: https://lnkd.in/gcUXTw-w #energy #energyindustry #renewables #renewableenergy #renewablepower #geothermal #geothermalenergy #texas #texaseconomy #riograndevalley #louisiana #louisianaeconomy #nevada #utah https://lnkd.in/g7xB8VVx

"Chesapeake Energy's $7 billion acquisition of rival natural gas producer Southwestern Energy is expected to close early in the fourth quarter, CEO Nick Dell'Osso said on Wednesday. "The deal was delayed earlier this year after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission requested additional information from the two. Chesapeake announced the all-stock purchase in January and originally had expected the acquisition to close by June 30. "Dell'Osso said on the sidelines of the Gastech energy conference that the U.S. natural gas market remains oversupplied. " 'We are going to be pretty cautious with how we think about changing our supply picture until we see that (oversupply) is no longer the case,' he said. "Chesapeake is producing about 3 billion cubic feet per day of gas and when the Southwestern deal closes its output will rise to about 7 bcfd, he said." #energy #energyindustry #oil #oilindustry #oilgas #oilandgas #natgas #naturalgas #hydrocarbons #energylaw #oilandgaslaw #shale #shaleoil #shalegas #energystrong https://lnkd.in/gdgVCH8s

"Texas Real Estate Commission Wind Leasing Requirements Legislative Update," AAPL - American Association of Professional Landmen, 9/17/24: LINK: https://lnkd.in/g5-x3K2t "Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a legal opinion in June holding that 'a person negotiating a lease for property of a wind power project on behalf of another, for compensation, is required to hold a license' issued by TREC. Our legislative solution seeks to exempt landmen from any such requirement, not only with wind leasing, but with all other energy sources and renewables to ensure landmen enjoy the same licensing exemptions they already have in the oil and gas industry. (. . .) “For background, SB 604 provided benefits and protections for AAPL members performing land work in Texas by adopting the official AAPL definitions and expanding the types of energy sources in which our members may work to include the broadly defined 'other energy sources' that apply to renewables, geothermal, hydrogen and even currently unknown sources. "SB 604 covered three key areas: ● Unauthorized practice of law protection: In Texas, landmen were already protected from unauthorized practice of law penalties, but our bill extended those protections to the full scope and breadth of work performed by landmen to include other energy sources. ● Independent contractor status: In Texas, landmen who meet specified criteria may be recognized as independent contractors, which includes the full protections the law affords. Our bill also expanded those protections and ensures they apply to the full range of services performed in all energy sources. ● Landman carve out for the franchise/margin tax: In Texas, landmen receive a franchise/margin tax exemption. Our bill ensured the exemption applies to the full scope of work performed in other energy sources. "We look forward to our legislative efforts in the coming Texas legislative session to protect members’ right to work and avoid unnecessary licensing or regulatory burdens."
