26 years ago, Laura Muñoz, a mother of six, was killed through an act of domestic violence not being able to find shelter for herself and her children. Her tragedy ignited advocacy for domestic violence prevention and intervention, leading to the creation of MAG’s Regional Domestic Violence Council. As the council met today to commemorate its 25th anniversary, we reflect on the progress made and reaffirm our commitment to ending domestic abuse. 💜 🔗 azmag.gov/DV

Lights! Camera! Action! 🎥 It’s #ThrowBackThursday – From the MAG region to Hollywood! Did you know the Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) in Mesa was used to film the 2007 blockbuster movie The Kingdom featuring Jamie Foxx? This final section of the Red Mountain Freeway opened in July 2008, marking the completion of the original set of freeway investments approved by Maricopa County voters in 1985 through Proposition 300. The freeway helped to relieve traffic congestion and improve more access for residents in the East Valley. #Prop400atWork #TBT #TransportationHistory #MAGregion #HollywoodFreeway 📸 Archive photos courtesy of the Arizona Department of Transportation

Our region’s light rail investments are fueling major economic development! 🚆 From 2000 to 2019, property values within a quarter mile of light rail surged by over 300%—which is double the countywide average over that same period. The latest Northwest extension added 1.6 miles to the light rail system and included the region’s first-ever elevated rail station and a new rail-only bridge over the I-17 freeway. More connectivity means more opportunity! #Prop400atWork Clips courtesy of Valley Metro

As our region experiences record-setting high temperatures 🌡️ at this time, MAG will keep the Heat Relief Network map 🗺️ available through the month of October as some of our heat relief partners are keeping their doors open to serve people beyond the regular season. The City of Phoenix plans to keep the Burton Barr Central Library open as a 24/7 cooling and respite center at least through October 7. We thank the incredible support of local businesses, faith-based organizations, and local governments that provide these critical resources and cooling sites to vulnerable people in our community during the hottest time of the year. 🔗 Learn more about the Heat Relief Network at azmag.gov/HeatRelief
