The Ocean11 marine club just wrapped up their first beach cleanup of the year, graciously supported by the Athletic Brewing Co. Two for the Trails grant program! Athletic Brewing Company’s love for the great outdoors is why they created their Two for the Trails program, where they donate up to $2 million annually to help protect, preserve, and maintain local trails. With these funds, we have made a greater impact with the Ocean11 beach cleanups by increasing access to transportation for the club and getting more supplies (like shovels!) to grow our efforts each term✨ Since every cleanup welcomes close to 60 students, we are able to introduce them to the beautiful Otter Rock Marine Reserve while giving back to the coastal community at the same time 🌊 Isn’t it FAN-PLASTIC? We are thrilled to have received this grant, and we’ve put it to use by making this past year’s beach cleanups our best yet! #AthleticBrewing #TwoForTheTrails #BCorp #GrantRecipient Athletic Brewing Company. It’s the final spotlight for our 2024 Roundhouse Foundation interns: ✨Abby McCombs!✨ With the generous support of the Roundhouse Foundation, Abby was able to join the iLab at Hatfield Marine Science Center this summer working with various technologies to test ocean acidification🌊! Hear from Abby herself about her research! “Much of the technology currently used for assessing ocean acidification is outdated and no longer supported, but it is crucial to climate observations around the world that these sensors remain in use and reliable. This is a sensor sustainment and development proposal, not a hypothesis-driven proposal. However, the outcome will contribute to the NOAA Ocean Acidification Observing Network buoy project’s main hypothesis that the range of natural variability as well as the rates and magnitude of acidification will vary across time, space, and depth because of local and regional geochemical, hydrological, and biological mechanisms. With these combined factors, it will allow for more accessible and efficient devices for ocean observations. After many hours of wiring and troubleshooting this dissolved inorganic carbon tabletop sensor, it is finally reaching a point where testing is underway.” “Wow” is all we can say! Well done, Abby! . . . #MACO #MarineAndCoastalOpportunities #OSU #OregonStateUniversity #oregon #marinestudies #studyatthecoast #marineclasses #marineresearch #hatfieldmarinesciencecenter

Time to spotlight the work of one of our 2024 Roundhouse Foundation interns: ✨Sophia Stavrianeas! With the generous support of the Roundhouse Foundation, Sophia was able to work in the iLab at Hatfield Marine Science Center this summer developing 🌊ocean profiling systems, which are devices that measure various ocean properties and current systems. Hear from Sophia herself about her research! “For my project, I am working on developing a low-cost ocean profiler that can change its buoyancy to sink and float independently. High-tech profilers already exist, but they are expensive and require a big investment from researchers. I want to create a version that is less expensive but can still help researchers collect data and learn more about the ocean.” So cool, right?! We are proud of you, Sophia! MACO team member spotlight: ✨Ryleigh Johnson!✨ “Hello! My name is Ryleigh and I am a Media and Communications Student Tech! My main responsibilities include creating website content and design, and creating promotional content for the various marine related courses OSU has to offer! I was born and raised in Colorado before coming to OSU to pursue a degree in Biology with the Marine Biology and Ecology concentration. After graduation, I plan to follow my passions into something related to intertidal or marine mammal research. Outside of school and work I enjoy crafting and being outdoors in the tide pools! My favorite coastal memory would have been spending time with my family on the Oregon coast during Thanksgiving, and getting to show them around. My favorite MACO memory was traveling to coastal field sites and using 360 cameras to capture the intertidal to eventually share with others.” We love having Ryleigh on our team! . . . #MACO #MarineAndCoastalOpportunities #OSU #OregonStateUniversity #oregon #marinestudies #studyatthecoast #marineclasses #marineresearch #hatfieldmarinesciencecenter

Time to spotlight the work of one of our 2024 Roundhouse Foundation interns: ✨ Paige Foust! ✨ With the generous support of the Roundhouse Foundation, Paige was able to work in the iLab at Hatfield Marine Science Center this summer studying gray whale behavior! Hear from Paige herself about her research! “This research project focuses on investigating the nocturnal behavior of gray whales off the Oregon coast using thermal imaging technology (FLIR M400 XR). The thermal camera is mounted on a custom-built platform I designed and manufactured using precise techniques. Components were modeled in Autodesk Inventor and assembled through the program before being fabricated and welded. The mounting system ensures stability during field observations, allowing for accurate infrared and visual data collection. This study aims to provide new insights into the nocturnal activities of gray whales, contributing to marine mammal research and conservation efforts along the Pacific Northwest coast.” Amazing work, Paige! OSU has many great resources for students to get involved in research and field work, one of which is URSA Engage! URSA Engage is a program that pairs first- and second-year undergraduate students or first-year transfer students with a mentor of their choice to work on a project in that mentor's area of study. Today, we are excited to spotlight some marine-related research projects in the program and the mentors overseeing them this year! If you are interested in more information, check out the URSA Engage informational sessions happening this week! 🌊 October 15th, LINC 314, 5-6pm beav.es/GkB 🦑 October 16th, Zoom meeting, 5-6pm beav.es/Gk6 View the URSA Engage website for a total list of faculty summaries, potential projects, application information, and program requirements! And should your URSA Engage project require time spent at the coast, MACO offers Coast to Valley shuttle tickets for free to eligible OSU students! Wow! Thank you to the OSU and Corvallis community for coming together to celebrate the work of Dr. Tessa Hill and her co-authored book, “At Every Depth: Our Growing Knowledge of the Changing Oceans.” MACO's student event was full of engaging questions and inspiring conversation about Dr. Hill's career and experiences. Later, we were joined by faculty, students, administrators, and community members for an insightful talk by Dr. Hill, a captivating Q&A, and a popular book signing session. This was a fantastic night for all and we are so appreciative of Dr. Hill, Oregon Sea Grant, and the Marine and Resource Management program for collaborating and hosting this event with us and the Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts for allowing us to hold the event in their lovely venue! . . . #MACO #MarineAndCoastalOpportunities #OSU #OregonStateUniversity #oregon #marinestudies #studyatthecoast #marineclasses #marineresearch #hatfieldmarinesciencecenter
