What's the problem with "Intentional Balloon Releases?" Well, the big problem is people don't know it's a problem. And Balloon Mission is changing that. Along with our balloon collection and recycling program, we've been working hard to get the message out about the hazards of intentional balloon releases and alternative ways to safely celebrate outside. The below pictures help explain part of the problem for animals. Picture 1 - Mass Balloon Release Many people release balloons in celebration or remembrance ceremonies and don't think about what happens once they disappear from sight. These pink latex and foil balloons with their long trailing plastic ribbons are bad news for animals (wildlife, farm, and domestic) when they meet up with them. The second picture is of my friend Ella, one of the co-founders of the Clean Up Kids from Chattanooga TN, holding up a bird tangled in plastic ribbon and a piece of pink latex balloon. What happens when a bird meets up with balloon litter floating on the water? Sadly, nothing good. Florida environmental advocate and journalist, Louis Aguirre wrote, "Every year thousands of birds, turtles, and other sea creatures die because they’ve either eaten or gotten themselves tangled in balloon litter. It’s why more coastal cities are now stepping up to ban balloon releases." https://lnkd.in/evitJqEJ We can do better. And we are! Balloon Mission is piloting new programs this school year to raise awareness and expand balloon collections to keep them out of the environment. We're also working with balloon designers and retailers to encourage responsible balloon practices with customers. Stay tuned to hear more about our developing programs with corporate sponsors and our mission to get signs up and save animals! As always we are so proud of our partners at ACDS, Inc. and Maryhaven, Inc. who make our collection program possible! Everyone counts when it comes to saving the environment.
