  • What a great way to get our young people excited and prepared for school! The Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) in Prince George's County, along with staff from the Evening Reporting Center and the Bridges2Success program, collaborated to provide over 120 book bags and school supplies to youth in Prince George's County. And we didn't stop there—we had food, drinks, snacks, shaved ice from Houey’s Shaved Ice truck, and even an Advanced Reality Gaming game truck where youth could compete to win a variety of prizes! We're so grateful for the opportunity to support our community's young people. #BookbagGiveaway #CommunitySupport #PrinceGeorgesCounty

  • The #RestaurantAssociationofMaryland (RAM) Director of Programs & Education Olivia Aberdeen and #ForgedPathways nonprofit Founder Jason Williams led the most recent DJS Career Exploration Series. The anticipated webinar opened with Aberdeen’s powerful presentation to the youth. The seasoned baker and chef who has transitioned to an education role shared her career experience and encouraged the youth with tips about where young students can succeed in the #culinaryindustry. Some of the programs RAM has to offer include #Servsafe training, Restaurant Management certification classes, a #ProStart education program for high school students with transferable college credits (two year program), and a new Restaurant Management Apprenticeship Program with the Department of Labor. “Our main goal is to let young people know that you can get the training you need to grow in the industry,” said Aberdeen as she explained the different roles that students can explore and how to reach a management position. The students heard from nonprofit founder Williams, and his Forged Pathways colleague “Mr. Holden,” who shared the ins and outs of a non-traditional career path with high-earnings potential. Offering 24 different programs, youth that are at least 17-years or older can apply to these local apprenticeships all the way to 62-year-olds, “It is never too late for education,” said Williams. He and “Mr. Holden” happily answered questions from the youth in the facilities, who were eager to learn more about these career opportunities that include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians and plumbing. “We are here to help you. You come here to work early but it reflects and pays off with your payment,” added Williams, who is committed to assist youth in placement during their transition back home. He has visited DJS Cheltenham Youth Detention Center in the past and shared more about these unique opportunities and training sessions with DJS youth and parents. “We can make something happen in the near future,” said DJS Changing Habits and Making Progressive Strides (C.H.A.M.P.S.) Events and Recreational Director Lisa LaPrade, while thanking Williams for his commitment with the youth, and looking forward to creating more spaces for the young people to participate in #learningsessions. #DJSCareerExplorationSeries continues to innovate as a virtual learning space where DJS youth from all the facilities can learn different professional opportunities from leaders across Maryland. #DJS #YouthCareerDevelopment #VirtualSpeakerSeries #YouthEmpowerment

  • What a heartwarming sight to see! With children returning to Dr. Bernard Harris Elementary School, next door to the location of a recent mass shooting, the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE) jumped in to help kids feel safe and loved, organizing a "praise tunnel" for the children on their first day back. It's amazing to see the community coming together to support our young ones as they return to school. DJS staff and community partners gathered to demonstrate their unwavering support and commitment to the children. Let's continue to show our love for these young students. #CommunityStrong #PraiseTunnel #SupportOurKids
