Secretary Rebecca Flora is speaking at Salisbury University this evening on the topics of sustainable growth and how vibrant and thriving places are made through planning and community engagement. Flora's talk tonight is titled "Thriving Communities: The Role of Planning in Shaping Livable Places for All" and embodies the conviction she has held through her career that "how" we grow and "for whom" we grow are far better questions than "where" we grow.

About us
Mission Statement: Maryland Department of Planning (Planning) provides guidance, analysis, outreach and support to ensure that all of the State’s natural resources, built environment and public assets are preserved and protected as smart and sustainable growth goals are attained. Planning provides land use planning and implementation support to local governments, communities, businesses, and organizations. We develop data and analysis to support planning activities throughout the state. The department provides technical assistance and local plan and program review to Maryland's counties and municipalities. We utilize research and analysis methods and other resources to assist in planning a sustainable future for Maryland. Demographic, socio-economic, cultural and geographic information and land-use trends are analyzed and then, using computer modeling and geographic information systems, are delivered as interactive online tools or practical guidance to users across the State.

Maryland Launches Drone Program for Medical Deliveries, Maryland is taking a bold step to bridge the healthcare gap for isolated communities by implementing drone delivery of medical supplies to Smith Island. This innovative $1.76 million federal program could transform emergency response capabilities and serve as a model for rural healthcare delivery nationwide. MDP, in partnership with University of Maryland’s UAS Research and Operations Center, secured federal funding to establish drone deliveries between Crisfield and Smith Island’s 350 residents, who currently depend on commercial boats for medical supplies. https://ow.ly/L5zX50TUsCk

Fall may be here, but so are applications for the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)'s free summer learning opportunities for Appalachian students! 👇 💡 The Appalachian Entrepreneurship Academy, hosted at Appalachian State University, seeks high school students interested in cultivating creativity and exploring entrepreneurship. 🔬 Meanwhile, the Appalachian STEM Academy invites middle school students, and high school students and teachers, to work on research projects alongside award-winning scientists at Ridge National Laboratory. We've ensured our partners can safely host camps in summer 2025 and we'll continue to work closely with them as their states recover from Hurricane Helene. Furthermore, we understand potential applicants may also be hurricane-impacted and we're committed to ensuring all students have the opportunity to apply. If an impacted student is unable to make the December 6 application deadline, please email academies@arc.gov. 💙 Learn more about each opportunity here: https://ow.ly/4Tlr50TR9ai

It’s officially the start of 2024 Economic Development Week in Maryland! Did you know? A study conducted by the Business Economic and Community Outreach Network at Salisbury University (BEACON) and MEDA’s Public Policy Committee revealed that for every dollar invested in Maryland’s county economic development operations, an estimated $9.17 is generated in state and local tax revenue! This demonstrates the powerful return on investment that economic development brings to our communities to create jobs, expand the tax base, and fuel long-term growth. As we kick off EDW, let's continue celebrating the ongoing impact of economic development efforts across the State!
