🚍Bus Lane Success🚍 Over the summer, the Maryland State Highway Administration teamed up with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and the Montgomery County Department of Transportation to create bus-only lanes along Georgia Avenue in Montgomery County. The bus lanes increased the average number of people moved along the corridor per hour by 900. Bus speeds also increased as much as 16%. There were four fewer crashes between Glenmont and Silver Spring during June and July of 2024, compared to the same time last year. About us
Since SHA’s inception as the State Roads Commission in 1908, the organization has built on its foundation of quality and integrity. We are proud of our tradition of excellence and happy to share our vision, our beliefs and our values with you. We believe that building a successful organization is similar to building roads or bridges because it all starts with a solid foundation. Instead of standard construction materials, we rely on our most important assets -- our values and our people. The State Highway Administration constantly strives to improve our team’s skills through a variety of career development programs.

The Maryland State Highway Administration and Maryland Transportation Authority held our annual Engineering and College Fair today at SHA’s headquarters building. It was a great opportunity for current engineers and recent college graduates to learn from several of our engineering professionals, ask questions and to find out what exciting career paths the MDOT family has to offer. Congratulations to the Maryland State Highway Administration and Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration for winning several grants totaling $1,864,421 from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The State Highway Administration received more than $1.5 million to invest in cutting-edge technology, including enhancements to the state’s virtual weigh station network with DOT readers that can electronically identify a commercial vehicle’s motor carrier name and determine potential violators of overweight and safety violations in real-time. This is an essential new screening tool that will help enhance safety and preserve the state’s infrastructure. Also, SHA will utilize the funds to deploy and implement the commercial Work Zone and Incident Communication (WZIC) alerts. A new commercial motor vehicle drive alert service is being offered through Drivewyze in partnership with INRIX. This service enhances Drivewyze's static safety notification service by incorporating INRIX traffic intelligence to alert drivers of real-time roadway conditions and construction zones enabling the driver to make safer driving decisions and helping to improve overall roadway safety.

When do we start preparing for winter operations? Oh, we’re already on it. Shops across the state are undergoing inspections like this recent one at the Frederick Shop. Every light, hose, plow, if it's on a piece of equipment - we check it. The goal here is preparation. Quality maintenance is a matter of good habits. #MDOTcares #snow #MDroads

Our LaVale shop has been preparing for winter by cleaning, painting, and inspecting all aspects of the vehicles to make sure they are ready to go for the winter season. These inspections greatly increase the life of the vehicles. #MDOTsafety #MDOTcares
