We are thrilled to collaborate with the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in support of world-renowned, multidisciplinary artist Jeffrey Gibson through the Dewey Square installation making its #Boston debut Sept 19. We look forward to seeing you there, and in the #Berkshires in early November for opening weekend of Gibson's newly commissioned, immersive installation POWER FULL BECAUSE WE’RE DIFFERENT, filling our signature Building 5 gallery. Paying homage to the past, while signaling hope for the future, through the lens of queer and Indigenous creatives whose cultural narratives have been historically marginalized is central to Gibson’s work and now the public has two opportunities in Massachusetts to experience it first hand. 🙏 Commonwealth of Massachusetts #VisitMA #JeffreyGibson #artsmatter https://lnkd.in/g7nq9ZV3

About us
In May 2024, MASS MoCA will celebrate its 25th anniversary under its new Director, Kristy Edmunds, not only as a contemporary art museum and performing arts venue, but also as a creative campus with a regional, national and global impact. MASS MoCA is one of the world’s liveliest centers for making and enjoying today’s most evocative art. With vast galleries and a stunning collection of indoor and outdoor performing arts venues, MASS MoCA is able to embrace all forms of art: music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, theater, and new, boundary-crossing works of art that defy easy classification. From its beginnings as the major textile mill Arnold Print Works in the mid-19th century, to its days as the Sprague Electric Company in the mid-20th century, to its current iteration as a globally renowned contemporary art museum and fabrication center, the 16-acre MASS MoCA campus has a rich history of serving as the economic engine of the city of North Adams and the surrounding region. Congratulations to our very own Board of Trustees Chair, Mariko Silver, on her new position leading the transformative next chapter of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts! ——— She will take the reins of Lincoln Center as it works to broaden its audience, navigate an uncertain economy and push through an ambitious plan to tear down the barriers between the center and the surrounding neighborhood. She will also help shape its programming. The appointment is a milestone for Lincoln Center: Silver, 46, whose father is Jewish and mother is Japanese American, will be the first woman of color to serve as president and chief executive. It is also a homecoming of sorts: Silver grew up a few blocks from the center and studied dance and theater as a child. https://lnkd.in/gX7hR_5B

"Priorities have shifted for today’s cultural institutions," says Director Kristy Edmunds. "It’s about helping the community, and helping artists." People have relied on outsized numbers to describe MASS MoCA ever since it first opened in 1999 in the old Sprague Electric Co. factory complex with a two-fold promise: It would bring world-class contemporary art to the Berkshires while also leading an economic revival in this faded factory town... ...After 25 years of odds-defying expansion, MASS MoCA is at a crossroads. The campus still has numerous buildings that could be developed. But instead of expanding the museum’s footprint, director Kristy Edmunds is seeking to usher in a new era of sustainability, stabilizing MASS MoCA’s finances, making its campus more environmentally friendly, and delivering more fully on its economic promise to the city — all while maintaining the museum’s freewheeling spirit. https://lnkd.in/gqY8YV_p

We are still in the afterglow of our 25th Anniversary Gala that took place May 24, 2024 in North Adams in our iconic Building 5 gallery. The night raised over $1.42M in support of MASS MoCA’s mission, exhibitions, public programs, performances, and artist residencies. MASS MoCA’s origin story centers on the epic adventure of transforming an abandoned factory site in North Adams, Massachusetts, into the largest multidisciplinary contemporary art museum in North America. From day one, MASS MoCA became a vibrant platform for artists while building a workforce that would be able to lean into the rigor of diverse aesthetics, processes, techniques, materials, and the specialized problem-solving needed for projects of scale. Twenty-five years on, MASS MoCA’s accumulated know-how has evolved with every artist we’ve worked with, and all are inexorably linked to who we are as an organization. We are grateful for the generosity, trust, and support of countless people throughout the years, including our Board of Trustees and those who joined us as we marked MASS MoCA’s 25th Anniversary. We share the promise of our future with you. Guests included: North Adams Mayor Jennifer Macksey, Founding Director Joseph Thompson, Nick Cave, Bob Faust, Helga Davis, Bill T Jones, Cai Guo-Qiang, Carol LeWitt, Chris Doyle, Gary Lichtenstein, Ann Hamilton, and the band Son Lux. With a special musical performance by Martha Redbone. The night ended with a toast and the surprise premiere of Cai Guo-Qiang's "25 Comets" in the courtyard. Very special thanks to Berkshire Bank, Adams Community Bank, Different Leaf, Gertie, TOURISTS , Williams College, Clark Art Institute, Mezze Bistro + Bar, The Porches Inn at Mass MoCA and many more!
