The 2000s were transformative for Massachusetts real estate. June was recognized as National Homeownership Month, and NAR secured federal protections for electronic signatures. The Community Preservation Act was created in 2000, and genetic information was added as a protected fair housing class. MAR played a key role in a 2002 lawsuit defending homeowners against state regulation of utility access. Military status was later added as a protected class, and in 2004, smart growth zoning laws were introduced to increase affordable housing. In 2009, Massachusetts REALTOR® David Peretti won NAR’s Distinguished Service Award, and MAR successfully opposed a sales tax on services.
