MBAE is proud to defend the statewide graduation requirement alongside teachers, parents, education advocates, elected officials, and business groups as a member of the Protect Our Kids' Future: Vote No On 2 coalition. Together, we seek to preserve educational standards for students and ensure equitable academic opportunities for all kids across the Commonwealth. “Statewide assessments provide a common, objective standard that ensures every public school student in Massachusetts is reaching for the same bar, regardless of their background,” said Former Secretary of Education Jim Peyser. “By maintaining a fair and uniform standard for what high school graduates need to know and be able to do, we enable students to demonstrate their skills on a level playing field, while ensuring that struggling students get the help they need to succeed. By joining the Network, the North Shore Chamber and MassMEP are signaling their commitment to ensuring all students get the education they need to be successful in college, career, and citizenship. The MBAE Affiliate Network includes forty-three members representing more than 35,000 employers across the state. MBAE Affiliates join the Network in response to their members’ concerns about the preparedness of students for the workforce and equality of economic opportunity. Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll’s insights at our recent Annual Luncheon & Awards ring true – “Young adults want to see that what they’re learning today has a connection to what they might do as a career. They want externships and internships. That’s why our vocational schools have waiting lists – that style of hands-on learning, developing a mastery – it works.” Massachusetts’s students need greater access to meaningful, high-quality educational pathways that prepare and lead them to real-world opportunities in higher education and the workforce. MBAE was honored to have the Lt. Governor join us in recognizing the impact of business engagement on our education system and for presenting the first MBAE Jack Rennie Award for Business Impact in Education to State Street. At our recent Annual Luncheon & Awards, MBAE Board Member Patricia Canavan spoke passionately about businesses’ duty to community: “As a business leader, my colleagues and I have both an obligation and an opportunity to help address the educational inequities, and the resulting achievement and wealth gaps for kids and families in Massachusetts. We can make an impact as business leaders by learning about the opportunities, challenges, and successes in our public educational system, and by acting on this knowledge. It’s critically important for businesses to lend our perspectives and our time, talent, and treasure to policymakers, teachers, and administrators who are doing this critical work. If we don’t, these achievement gaps, skills gaps, and wealth gaps will continue not only have a disparate impact on select communities in the Commonwealth, but will also be an economic threat to the businesses in Massachusetts and to our overall economic competitiveness.” Thank you Tricia for using your experience and expertise to help us mobilize business leaders for educational progress so that we can provide students, families, and entire communities access to economic opportunity.
