Yesterday, MACP was proud to participate in a vital conversation around the complexities of Massachusetts' competitiveness at an event hosted by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. The event highlighted the findings from the recently released Massachusetts Competitiveness Index, a report (sponsored by MACP) from the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation (MTF) in collaboration with the UMass Donahue Institute, and which aims to guide data-driven policy changes. Our President & CEO, Jay Ash, delivered an introduction to MTF President Douglas Howgate, emphasizing the strong partnerships between those focusing on this work, and the importance of this new Index in helping Massachusetts remain competitive. Doug provided an overview of the Index, and talked about his vision to utilize the Index to drive impact. The event then transitioned into a panel of top leaders: Jim Rooney (Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce), Sara Fraim (Mass Technology Leadership Council), and Jane Steinmetz (EY Boston), in addition to Doug Howgate. Their discussion underscored that Massachusetts' competitiveness isn't about a single issue—and that all issues are interconnected. From housing affordability to transportation and the complexities of our tax environment, there are many challenges to address if we want to retain talent, attract businesses, and strengthen our communities. Additionally, there are many ways in which Massachusetts is leading, from education to innovation— the panelists also talked about how we can better communicate why Massachusetts is a great place to live and work. Thanks to all who contributed to this important dialogue, especially the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation and Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce for putting on this event. MACP looks forward to continuing to work with our partners in our shared pursuit towards a more competitive (as Jay reminded us, it is our middle name after all!) and thriving Massachusetts. A Boston Globe editorial referring to the results of education reforms that made MA schools the envy of the nation, concludes "By removing the MCAS requirement — without replacing it with any alternative statewide method of ensuring diplomas remain meaningful — Question 2 would put that progress at risk. Education is the core strength of Massachusetts — our workforce, our government, our future — and that is not a risk we can afford to take. The Globe strongly endorses a no vote on Nov. 5." https://lnkd.in/en-UN9sT
