In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, MassDOT is celebrating the rich contributions and cultural heritage of the Massachusetts’s Latino community and remains committed to diversity in transportation. This week we are highlighting Diana Perez, who is the Chief of Staff to MassDOT’s Chief Safety Officer. Diana shares what Hispanic Heritage means to her. “Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of who I am. From the rich cultural traditions to the countless contributions made to the history of the United States. My heritage has shaped my values, my goals, my personality and ultimately how I interact with others. As a first generation Latin American, I take great pride in expressing the importance of exploring culture to learn about other people. My multi-cultural background has helped me connect with people in unique ways and view other’s perspectives from a different lens. This month, as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I encourage you to commit to a future where diversity is celebrated and embraced!”

Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt recognized and awarded employees with Certificates of Achievement during the MassDOT Board of Directors Meeting on Tuesday, September 18, 2024. These individuals were honored for their exceptional leadership and dedication in overseeing RMV branches during a significant outage earlier this year. Registrar Colleen Ogilvie expressed her pleasure in highlighting the efforts of the seven RMV employees, noting how the RMV exceeded expectations in assisting the affected residents across Massachusetts. She emphasized, "these kinds of activities are very important, and they fall on the people that manage the individuals that are doing the registration services.” - Colleen Ogilvie, Registrar of Motor Vehicles. This recognition reflects the RMV's commitment to always valuing and respecting RMV customers and Commonwealth residents. #Spotlight moment on Daniel Shedo, Civil Engineer at MassDOT Daniel Shedo started his journey at MassDOT in the summer of 2022 as an intern at Highway Design HQ. After successfully completing a 3-month internship, he was offered a full-time job opportunity. “Since joining MassDOT in June 2023, I have been actively involved in designing highway projects. I also review various jobs to ensure compliance with MassDOT standards. This includes field visits for data collection and other assigned tasks which are part of my responsibilities. I was inspired to pursue my career as a civil engineer by my older brother, who is also a civil engineer. The conversations between my brother and friends during my childhood had a significant impact on my career choice. Additionally, my best friend's passion for engineering and technology serves as a daily inspiration. I consider publishing a research paper in an international journal as one of my proudest accomplishments right now. Read Science Direct article: "Serviceability Analysis and Feasibility Study of Ballasted Rooftop PV System on Existing Concrete Roof Slab Buildings" https://lnkd.in/eQQG3crR I was also recognized as the best graduate civil engineering student at the University of New Haven in 2023, which I appreciate so much from my alma mater. Advice to share? I believe that striving to be a useful person is key to success in any career. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of making the effort to be useful and supportive in the workplace. I am humbled by the depth and breadth of knowledge accumulated at MassDOT The team consists of incredibly intelligent individuals who are doing an outstanding job. I am particularly impressed by MassDOT's commitment to embracing advanced technology in our industry. The management is not afraid to explore new procedures and technologies that can simplify tasks for employees and enhance efficiency. Since my time as an intern, numerous technological advancements have been introduced, such as the AI chatbot currently in the testing phase. This chatbot has the potential to significantly reduce the time spent searching through various guides and manuals. I have been part of so many exciting initiatives and I am grateful to the leadership for their proactive approach. We are daily reminded of the importance of ensuring that our infrastructure is accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities. Regardless of the investments we make in our highways, bridges, and other facilities, it is crucial that we prioritize inclusivity and ensure that disabled individuals can utilize these resources without any barriers. #disabilitypridemonth #Inclusivity #Transportation #MassDOT #Disability #Inclusion #Spotlightmoment #EmployeeAppreciation
