About us
PURPOSE: Mastery Transcript Consortium® (MTC), an ETS company, is a national and global nonprofit membership organization that helps make mastery learning—or competency-based education—available to all learners. Because this approach does not generate traditional metrics, we co-create uniquely flexible and scalable learning records to solve the challenge of credentialing. MTC accelerates equitable access to and widespread implementation of mastery learning models, empowering students to showcase competencies and share evidence of their learning.

“The end is better models for education. We know the conditions we need to make learning more engaging for everyone. Our collective efforts are starting to take root and catch fire. That’s pretty exciting!” - Mike Flanagan, CEO of MTC During a Fireside Chat at the #MTCSymposium24, Virgel Hammonds of Aurora Institute, Danielle Eisenberg of Skills for the Future/ETS, and Mike Flanagan dug into key efforts underway across the ecosystem to transform the architecture of K12 education. They highlighted the critical need to develop new ways of assessing, measuring, and documenting the durable skills learners need to succeed in today’s workforce. #MTCSymposium24 #CapturingProgress #FiresideChat #ETS #AuroraInstitute #SkillsfortheFuture #LearnerAgency #PersonalizedLearning #MasteryLearning

So exciting to see this get the recognition it deserves. Way to go Mike Flanagan and Mastery Transcript Consortium® (MTC) team!
🎓 If you’re familiar with my work, you know that I’m a big proponent of mastery-based learning. 📈 When done well, it ensures students don’t develop holes in their learning, provides more actionable feedback, helps them develop agency and executive function skills—the list goes on. 😨 But one major limitation to its widespread adoption is the fear that it will hurt students’ prospects because postsecondary gatekeepers, such as colleges, won’t be able to make sense of mastery-based “grades.” 💻 Mastery Transcript Consortium® (MTC) is an organization working to solve this problem through the development of flexible and scalable mastery-based learning records. 🗣 I sat down with MTC’s CEO, Mike Flanagan, to learn more about the org’s work and their recent merger with ETS. Below are a few of my takeaways from the conversation: - Opening up to a wider variety of learning demonstrations gives students and colleges more latitude to identify the right fit - We have long valued durable skills (rebranded from soft skills), and it’s time to start teaching them more explicitly and measuring them more deliberately in context and with external rigor - We may be seeing a lot more mastery transcripts very soon. With the help of their new high-powered parent org and AI tools, MTC looks to scale to half of all districts by 2030.

Really appreciated the opportunity to participate in this conversation with Dr.Waleed, Professor Chris, and Professor Seyedahmad. We’re inspired at Mastery Transcript Consortium® (MTC) by the work of The Digital School and its work to reach marginalized communities around the world. #masterytranscript #mtc #thedigitalschool #cbe #ler #credentials
I hope you will watch this webinar/podcast on Assessment and Credentials, which focuses on new methods of evaluating and documenting students' accomplishments attaining difficult-to-measure cross-career durable-skills such as creativity and tenacity. This is especially important for marginalized communities who lack access to resources used by privileged groups to do well on high-stakes tests and to invest in expensive degrees and credentials. I am the co-moderator; this episode has insights from Seyedahmad Rahimi and Mike Flanagan. This is the eighth episode in a series of Digital Education Dialogues sponsored by The Digital School المدرسة الرقمية, which I am helping to develop. #thedigitalschool #stealthassessment #credentials #marginalizedstudents #masterytranscripts https://lnkd.in/eBr_WXbr

On the Future of Education podcast with Michael Horn, the CEO of Mastery Transcript Consortium® (MTC), Mike Flanagan, shares the vision behind transforming our current schooling models. Too often, traditional systems like GPAs and credit hours limit innovative learning experiences. But MTC offers a solution—an alternative credentialing system focused on competencies and skills, allowing students to showcase authentic work and development of skills. This can help shift 1. K12 systems by focusing on the development of durable skills in addition to academic content and 2. the college admissions process so it can prioritize assets instead of gaps.
