Hopeless new grad....
In one year, in one hospital, two nurses committed suicide. No one suspected their loneliness and fear. They did not share their true feelings of vulnerability, fear, isolation and intimidation in the workplace.
Often, we assume our new graduates are receiving the appropriate orientation, mentorship and onboarding but underneath the surface or layers, there is a deep valley of inconsistency, bullying, and lack of leadership oversight. The evidence-based processes such as Benners Novice to Expert, Donna Wright's Competency Model, and programs such as Versant are tools to support onboarding and competency. The Transition into Professional Practice Programs are designed to ensure effective, quality-based nursing education and residency programs, when leveraged correctly with outcome monitoring.
It is key to engage your clinicians in meaningful conversations regarding their onboarding, education, and perceptions about care delivery. They are hungry for leadership connection through positive, mentoring and collegial relationships. Walk alongside your clinicians and collaborate, hear their ideas and create partnership in practice, while getting to know them as individuals. Lastly, find out what they need, want and what they enjoy or dislike about the organization and care delivery system.
I recently came across this post from a new graduate, reaching out for help. What steps will you take today to identify and address the caregivers who are feeling the same as this person. #engagement #nursing #nursingleadership
