The future of materials is being shaped by those who experiment, document, and share their discoveries. Every step forward—big or small—helps build a more regenerative and collaborative world. Eleanor MacMillan, textiles design graduate, shares her latest milestone: "I created a personal library of biomaterials and have just released my first bio-zine. It captures my material journey, recipes I’ve experimented with, insights on industry topics, and a space for other designers to showcase their work." By documenting and sharing her process, Eleanor is making biomaterial knowledge more accessible and fostering collaboration within the field. We’re inspired by her dedication! Scroll through for a preview of her bio-zine. Do you have a story of progress—big or small? We’d love to help share it. About us
Imagine a world where plastic is plant food. A world where the plastic juice bottle you toss into the bin has a life ahead of it that you might never have imagined. Made from compostable bioplastic, it can fertilise nutrient-starved soils and help drawdown carbon. If it lands up in the ocean, it degrades into food for fish. Rather than another piece of pollution, it is a bundle of nutrients. Abundant biomass - unavoidable food waste, regeneratively farmed seaweed and mycelium - feeds this new materials economy which generates sustainable alternatives to plastics, textiles, and other FMCGs. This type of regenerative economy can enrich communities around the globe and incentivise net-positive value chains. Materiom - growing the regenerative materials economy

At #ATRIUM, we’re combining cutting-edge #technology with #ecofriendly materials to revolutionize construction. As the project coordinator, our partner Aitiip Centro Tecnológico is also leading the development and scaling of #biobased materials for #sustainable building solutions. 🔬 So far, Aitiip has tested bioplastics from #renewable sources and is now exploring new bio-based alternatives. These materials will be reinforced with natural fibers like flax and hemp, enhancing strength and durability. 🖨️ Aitiip is also applying large-scale 3D printing, a fast and efficient manufacturing process that enables the #production of complex, high-performance components. This technology will be used to create the water collection systems for ATRIUM’s Green Wall, a key feature for #sustainable urban #design. Stay tuned as we continue #BuildingTomorrow with bio-based #innovation! 🌍 The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme under Grant Agreement No 101135031and co-funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee. The future of sustainable materials isn't built overnight - it's shaped through countless experiments and iterations, with mini and major breakthroughs along the way. Lite-1, a biodesign venture revolutionising how we produce colour, shares their recent milestone: "We've successfully created 3 colours with microbes, in a circular system. Black is one of the most prominent toxic colours in our world, so having a new form of it will be vital to the clean transition" - Kellan Hannah. Their work exemplifies how biotechnology can transform traditional manufacturing processes, offering sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based dyes that have long dominated the textile industry. By harnessing the power of microorganisms, they're proving that nature holds the key to cleaner, safer colour production. Got your own progress story to share? Whether it's a major milestone or a small step forward, we want to hear about it. In Barcelona with CiD Erasmus+ project! Workshop and conference days 🚀 I’m happy to be back in Barcelona with CiD Innovation Alliance for an international workshop, together with 12 students we selected from Università degli Studi di Genova during the thanks to the "CiD speed-up! Boost circular ecosystems" elective course. They'll collaborate, from 24th to 26th February, with students from Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, which is hosting us, and from Leibniz Universität Hannover. Together, they will face collaborative activities on skills for circular design at a biobased, urban, and product/service scale. I am also here to take part in the Responsive Cities conference, where I will talk about our role in CiD as designers in this transition and as the Department of Architecture and Design from University of Genova, made possible thanks to the collaboration with our 11 European partners. An exciting opportunity to share knowledge and contribute to a more sustainable future! #CircularDesign #ResponsiveCities #CiD #CiDInnovationAlliance Thanks to all the partners Fiona Demeur Aleyna Gültekin #IAAC - Nele Plutus Helen Arme Tallinna Ettevõtlusinkubaator / Tallinn Business Incubator #TEI - Jörg Schröder Anna Pape Jackie Williams #LUH - Alessandro Pernice #ARCES - Marite Guevara Carlos Miret #ERSILIA - Larissa De Rosso Architects' Council of Europe (ACE-CAE) - Lizeth Lopez alda* - European Association for Local Democracy - Concetta Montagnese Federica Tenaglia Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche - Martynas Germanavičius Paulius Kliučininkas eglė kliučinskaitė Architektūros fondas - Pilar Bolumburu Charlene Smith, PhD Materiom - Silvia Pericu Chiara Olivastri Luisa Chimenz Niccolò Casiddu Claudia Porfirione Nicola Valentino Canessa Giorgia Tucci Lara Ippolito Stella Femke Rigo Chiara Garofalo #UniGe, all our Observatories and the other people joining and collaborating!
