  • Our See Me Hear Me 2024 campaign has started with the launch of a report that shares the findings from a small research project we conducted in 2022 with our Maternity Ambassadors for Change (MACs). The campaign this year is focusing on placing the voices of the Black birthing community at the centre of research and data. We know that Black maternal women are underrepresented in research and data and therefore have no influence on policy development around Black maternal disparities. Building trust with the community is one factor in the development of public health policy that seeks to create health equity, however collaborating with and empowering communities to develop their own research questions and then collect, analyse and interpret the data will yield a different viewpoint and create more targeted tangible solutions. Please see the full report on our website https://lnkd.in/en9zSjKN Please like, share and comment. The campaign will be shared across our platforms over the coming months and look out for our event in February 2025 - The Conversation, which will be on Eventbrite. #SMHM2024 #seemehearme24 #smhmcommunityresearch #smhmcommunitydata Catalyst 4 Change CIC Dr Tamanda Walker connected Rebeca Sandu Black Thrive Amaka Asiodu Chloe Agbe Chantelle Pemberton La Keiya Robinson Ava C. • We’re saddened to read that 48% of NHS trusts were rated inadequate or needing improvement in their maternity care by the Care Quality Commission. The findings echo what black birthing women tell us everyday: that maternity care can be a dangerous and uncompassionate space to give birth. MEA creates safe social spaces for black mums in Birmingham to heal and work through their birth and life trauma. We train local mums to become community researchers and agents for change. We recognise that we also have a role to play in making things better. We see the power in sharing collective stories of good and bad care, so that NHS partners can learn and implement realistic changes, in collaboration with local communities. If we could change one thing right now, we wish that all women are listened to and have their experiences believed. Compassion was always a foundation of NHS care. Let’s get back to that! • It's Black Maternal Mental Health Week 2024 and this year’s theme is “Transforming and Advancing Change”. Black women are 40% more likely to experience postnatal depression and only about half as likely to seek professional help as a result of stigma within our communities and cases of previous negative experiences with accessing mental health support. This is why Black Maternal Mental Health matters, and why we must take action to reduce these disparities in care access. We want to make is easier for Black moms to access culturally sensitive care in the times that they may need it the most, so by working with The Motivational Mums Club we are offering free online therapeutic sessions for Black momas and moms-to-be in Birmingham. These sessions are confidential and held by a Black professional psychologist and mum. To sign up just fill in the form in our bio or head over to the 'Help & Support' page on our website. #BMMHW24 #BMMHWUK #BlackMaternalMentalHealth #TransformingChange #onlinetherapeuticsupport #blackmotherhood #perinatalmentalhealth #meamoma #meaforblackwomen #blackmaternalmentalhealthweek The Motherhood Group

Consultant, Facilitator & Researcher: Centring lived experience and storytelling in research, data and systems change efforts.

Data is indeed intensely political. And part of how we influence and make change. It’s been a pleasure working with the teams at Maternity Engagement Action CIC and Connected by Data over the past few months. Together we’ve spent our time reflecting on how and why it’s important to centre Black women’s voices and data initiatives within perinatal healthcare in Birmingham. And why it’s also essential to ensure we’re truly and meaningfully seen and heard by the health system. We look forward to the start of our See Me Hear Me campaign in the coming weeks, and launching our first community research report this coming November. Check out the video below which shares a little more about our shared aims and process!

Data is political! With Care Full, Just Treatment, London Renters Union, No Excuses and See Me Hear Me, we’ve been working to build community power on data and AI. Communities are affected daily by data governance decisions made by others, whether corporations, local and national government, or civil society organisations, at home, in education, and at work. They may be made the target of damaging or biassed policies as a result of profiling; miss the opportunity to benefit from cutting edge research by being absent or underrepresented in key datasets; or feel caricatured and disenfranchised through the way data is collected about them. At the same time this is increasingly intensified through the use of AI and automated decision making built on this data, where a lack of transparency and accountability or redress has the potential for even great harms. Community A group or organisation brought together by geography, identity, or the impacts of particular data and technology … Campaigns … seeking to bring about a clearly defined change … on data … how data is collected, used or governed - so that it better serves community interests. Check out this video on what we’ve been up to. Read more about this project and hear the campaigns' stories on our website: https://lnkd.in/ebCyCpNA

It's heart breaking to here that three Black babies, all siblings and born of the same mother and father, have been abandoned in East London over the past seven years. It's clear that this mother desperately needs support. To have carried Elsa to full term, birth her, and abandon her only one hour after birth with her umbilical cord still intact, the questions in our mind are, who is helping her birth these babies? Is she birthing them herself? What postnatal support is she receiving, if any? Is she a victim of abuse or trafficking? What is her state of mind? Are they able to access NHS and family planning services? She WILL need perinatal mental health support. I know we're making lots of assumptions here, but as a Black perinatal wellness organisation, we can clearly see something is not right and we are not here to criminalize this woman, and these rare circumstances. If you are struggling during your pregnancy or postnatal journey, you do not have to deal with this alone. Please utilise the support services and resources below.
