Mental health labels should bring clarity, not judgment. Every diagnosis is a step towards self-awareness, not a definition of who you are. Read more in our latest blog post to understand how you can cultivate compassion for yourself and others by seeing beyond labels, while using your diagnosis to foster empathy and non-judgement. https://bit.ly/3Y6LaLe #mathewscounseling #therapy #therapist #mentalhealth #requestanappointment

When anxiety strikes, the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique is a go-to tool to reconnect with the present moment. This technique helps bring your focus back to your surroundings and out of anxious thoughts. Here’s how to try it: At Home Sitting in your living room? Name 5 things you can see (the couch, a plant), 4 things you can feel (the texture of your shirt, your feet on the ground), 3 things you can hear (a car outside, a clock ticking), 2 things you can smell (coffee, fresh air), and 1 thing you can taste (your morning tea). On a Walk Feeling stressed while out and about? Use this technique to ground yourself in nature. Name 5 things you see (trees, flowers), 4 things you feel (wind, your shoes on the ground), 3 things you hear (birds chirping, leaves rustling), 2 things you smell (fresh air, earth), and 1 thing you can taste (a piece of gum). Before Bed If you’re struggling to fall asleep, try using this grounding exercise to calm your mind. Name 5 things in your room, 4 sensations (your sheets, the pillow under your head), 3 sounds (a fan, silence), 2 smells (your lotion, the fresh air), and 1 taste (a sip of water). https://bit.ly/49DVXjC #mathewscounseling #therapy #therapist #mentalhealth #requestanappointment

October is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the importance of mental health and the many facets that come with understanding it. As conversations about mental health become more widespread, there’s an increasing recognition that taking care of our minds is just as crucial as taking care of our bodies. However, receiving a mental health diagnosis or label can bring a mix of benefits and challenges. Below we’ll explore both the positives and the difficulties that come with getting a diagnosis, while also addressing some common misconceptions that surround mental health disorders, particularly those that often face stigma. https://bit.ly/3Y6LaLe #mathewscounseling #therapy #therapist #mentalhealth #requestanappointment

Mindful breathing is a simple yet powerful tool to reduce stress and center yourself. By focusing on each inhale and exhale, you can calm both your mind and body. Here are three ways you can use mindful breathing today: The 4-7-8 Technique Feeling anxious? Try the 4-7-8 method. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale slowly for 8. Repeat this 4 times. This technique engages your parasympathetic nervous system, helping your body relax. Box Breathing Need a quick reset? Try Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold again for 4. This technique is great for centering your focus and slowing your heart rate. Perfect before meetings or stressful moments. Breath Awareness Take 5 minutes to simply focus on your breath. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Notice how your breath moves through your body. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breathing. This simple practice helps reduce tension and clear your mind. https://bit.ly/49DVXjC #mathewscounseling #therapy #therapist #mentalhealth #requestanappointment

Social media has become an integral part of modern life, with an estimated 4.9 billion users globally. This number is expected to rise to 5.85 billion by 2027. Facebook leads the pack with around 2.9 billion monthly active users, followed closely by YouTube, which has just 400 million fewer users. In the U.S. alone, the average citizen manages about seven social media accounts, spending more than two hours a day on these platforms (Forbes Advisor, 2024). In just a few decades, social media has transformed how we interact. It provides instant access to information and 24/7 connectivity, but its impact on mental health has raised concerns. Some U.S. states are even considering laws to limit social media usage for adolescents due to these concerns. https://bit.ly/4f4sjaA #mathewscounseling #therapy #therapist #mentalhealth #requestanappointment
