"I am proud to be a Chicano / Mexican American. My paternal abuelitos (Asencion and Nestora Contreras) found each other in south Texas (Rio Grande Valley) in the early 1950's and started a family built on love and courage. Together they raised nine children (and numerous grandchildren). They were a family of migrant workers that followed the crops across the southern and western part of the United States where they were in the cold, heat, suffocating humidity, and days that started before sunrise and ended after sunset. Through it all my abuelitos found a way to ensure that their children received an education. My abuelitos boasted about their children's successes and never missed the opportunity to stress how important "your education" is. As a family we battled generational poverty and mental illness in the family, but through our love as a family, we demonstrated the beauty of Mexican American families like ours: resilience and determination. This month I lift up my family that built a legacy for me to continue to shine." "For me, the celebration of our culture and heritage during Hispanic Heritage each year in the fall always feels like a return to home. My pride swells as I read, learn, and hear about the beautiful diversity within the Latine community. The art, music, food, families, and love that emerges in this celebration reminds me of the passion our community brings to all aspects of life." Incredibly grateful to our friends at EAB for giving me and my teammates at Matriculate the opportunity to talk about our work and how we're working toward closing the college access gap.
