Today, after a small ceremony at Philly Shipyard in Pennsylvania, the cutting of steel plates began, initiating the construction on the first of Matson’s three new “Aloha Class” containerships. The three vessels are being designed for Matson’s Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express (CLX) services, with delivery to Matson in 2026 and 2027. All three vessels are designed to operate on either conventional marine fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will be delivered LNG-ready to help Matson achieve its 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal while also providing additional capacity and speed, benefitting our Hawaii service as well as the CLX. Contingency Planning for Possible Work Stoppage at U.S. East Coast and Gulf Ports Dear Customers and Shippers: The possibility that members of the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) may conduct a work stoppage at East Coast and Gulf ports is increasingly more likely. Earlier, negotiations were halted between the ILA and the UNITED STATES MARITIME ALLIANCE LIMITED, which represents the ocean carriers. With the current contract ending on Monday, September 30, 2024, any work action could start as early as Tuesday, October 1, 2024. The nation’s supply chain is already being impacted. Please reach out to discuss the options we have to help you. These include: — Pulling any containers from port and terminal facilities as soon as possible. Some ocean terminals have extended their gate hours to accommodate the expected surge in the out-gating of import containers and the in-gating of export containers. — Monitoring per diem and demurrage and helping you minimize terminal and ramp charges as best we can. — Receiving and storing your products and containers. Our Savannah Logistics Complex is located within 10 minutes of the Port of Savannah and can assist with receiving, transloading, storage, and distribution of your products, both inbound and outbound. We can also provide short- and long-term secured parking for containers and trailers. — Helping reroute your imports or exports to the West Coast. We offer the same transportation and storage options and services in Oakland. — Transloading from international ISO containers into our fleet of 53-foot intermodal containers, dry vans, or international short boxes that are positioned for inland routing. The situation is changing each day, and we will keep you updated on developments.
