We are so grateful to have been chosen by PennPAC (Penn Pro bono Alumni Consulting) as one of a few non profits they will be working with this fall. PennPac experts will be helping us analyze and share data from our pilot with 11 schools who engaged with our first-of-its-kind mattering curriculum, reaching approximately 1100 students and 150 teachers. 40% of the schools in our pilot serve low income students, and our pilot partners represent a diverse range of schools across the U.S. and one in Jordan (Middle East). So much of this research from Making Caring Common at HGSE aligns with work we are doing at the Mattering Movement to foster communities where people feel valued and are relied on to add value, a science-backed pathway to mental health and connection. High number of respondents (67%) reported social-emotional loneliness and not having enough close friends and family. Many reported existential loneliness (65%) - feeling fundamentally disconnected from others or the world with 63% reporting that their place in the world does not feel important. Aside from our need for food and shelter, our most basic human need is the need to matter. https://lnkd.in/ea5Mwm-V
Loneliness has been in the news in recent years, including a recent New York Times Magazine cover story, and a Surgeon General Advisory declared it an epidemic. But crucial questions beg for better answers. Most basically, what exactly is loneliness? How do Americans describe it, and how might the answer to this question inform solutions? What, more specifically, are the psychological, community and societal factors that may be driving loneliness, and what personal and societal strategies might prevent and mitigate it?
